News: Closures on Three Rivers This week brings new closures to the fishing that is happening inside the park. As a result of the recent high temperatures of the rivers, the Firehole, Madison, and lower Gibbon are under temporary closures as the water has an average temperature of 80-86o. This is a major change from the 2:00pm restriction from the previous week. The Gallatin River:Recent rainfall has added some color and sediment to the Gallatin over the past couple days. Summer storms often turn it muddy fast in that drainage and it can take time to settle back down. Flows bumped a bit too. It seems the river has started to clear after similar events though.The Gallatin still fishes pretty well even with the extra dirt in the water. Its colder temps help a lot right now when the heat wave has other rivers shut down. PMDs and caddis keep producing some dry fly action along with Yellow Sallies. Salmonflies and golden stones are still around in the park section.

Firehole River
Use extreme caution and practice ethical angling. As of July 9, Yellowstone National Park implemented mandatory "hoot owl" restrictions on the Firehole River, closing fishing daily from 2:00 p.m. until sunrise due to warm water temperatures and low flows. Recent water temperatures have exceeded levels considered stressful and potentially lethal for trout.
If you choose to fish the Firehole, do so very early in the morning and carry a thermometer. PMDs, caddis, and lingering BWO activity can provide a brief but productive dry-fly window from sunrise through mid-morning. Small soft hackles, PMD nymphs, Missing Links, and CDC caddis patterns remain effective. Focus on faster riffles, shaded runs, and cooler inflow areas where trout are concentrating. Once water temperatures begin climbing, move to another fishery.
Best Flies: PMD Sparkle Duns, Missing Links, CDC Caddis, Soft Hackles, small PMD nymphs, Zebra Midges.

Late spring showers and cool weather have been kind to the insect life as the PMDs have arrived and begun stealing the show for the summer. We are still looking at water levels and temperatures being a couple weeks ahead of the usual schedule as the last bits of snowmelt trickles down. That being said, things are starting to settle in, leading to more opportunities opening up every day.Firehole River
Water temperatures continue to rise on the Firehole, making it paramount, as stewards of this ecosystem, to prioritize proper fish care and handling. Temps on the lower stretches of the river are often reaching the 70s, so start your days here early and consider fishing elsewhere after lunchtime on the sunny and warm days ahead.That being said, the hatches lately have been superb. Soft hackles and small mayfly nymphs swung on lighter tippet continue to be productive until more consistent topwater activity is observed.

We couldn’t be more excited for the start of the 2026 Park season at Yellowstone Fly Shop. With western rivers opening early this year (May 1), anglers will have more opportunities than ever to fish some of our favorite water on this side of the park, and conditions are shaping up for an epic opener! If you’re planning to get out, now’s the time to reserve a trip with one of our guides, as dates are filling in quickly. That beingsaid, we spent the day scouting water around the park—here’s what we found:Madison River
Clarity: 4/5

The Madison is running slightly below average for this time of year at around 470cfs compared to the average at 551cfs. This is still well above the record low which was 358cfs in 1941.
The water is mostly clear, with the Gibbon being the main source of sediment in the water column. Temperatures are varying with peaks in the mid 50°s on cooler days, and up to 60°s during the recent warm-ups.
