Can long nails actually help with self-defense?
They might scratch someone during a struggle, but I would never tell someone to depend on their nails for protection.
Long natural nails and acrylic nails can bend, break, or hurt your own fingers. A scratch is also not guaranteed to stop anybody.
The goal of self-defense is not to stay there and win a fight. The goal is to protect yourself, create some space, and get away when you can.
I also hear people say you should scratch an attacker so you can collect DNA under your fingernails. Biological material can sometimes be collected as evidence, but your safety comes first. Never stay in danger just to try to leave or collect evidence.
If you wear long nails and take a self-defense class, practice with the nail length you really wear. You may find that some hand movements feel different with longer nails.
Pepper spray, a personal alarm, or a stun gun can give you another option where legal, but those tools are still backup.
Awareness comes first.
I put together a full guide on self-defense with long nails and what you should realistically expect.
