This is what a thriving hive looks like. Thousands of bees, all with a purpose, all doing exactly what God designed them to do.

This is why we love what we do. 🍯

🌧️ Oh my gosh... is that RAIN?!

Nebraska has been thirsty and today God answered. We are so incredibly thankful for this gentle rain soaking into our ground right now.

Our bees technically do not fly in the rain. They hunker down inside the hive and wait it out. But trust us, if they could grab an umbrella and do a little rain dance today they absolutely would.

Our zinnias that we just planted need this. Our 25 plus acres of pollinator grass needs this. The whole state needs this.

Sometimes the most important thing a beekeeper can do is look up, say thank you, and let the rain do its job.

We are grateful. πŸ™πŸ―

🐝 Hive inspection last night and wow.

This right here is what every beekeeper lives for. Wall to wall capped brood. What you are seeing in this picture is frame after frame absolutely packed with baby bees. Each one of those capped cells has a developing bee inside that will emerge in the next few days and join the colony.

This time of year the queen is at her absolute peak. She can lay up to 1,500 to 2,000 eggs every single day. When you see a frame that looks like this it tells you everything you need to know. The queen is healthy, the workers are doing their job, and the colony has everything it needs to thrive.
This is nature doing exactly what God designed it to do when you give it the right resources and get out of the way.

Fresh spring honey will be coming soon. 🍯

Our hives are looking strong heading into summer and we could not be more grateful. A strong hive this time of year means a strong honey flow later in the season. And that means more R Family Honey headed your way. 🍯

🌱 They are in the ground!

Tonight as a family we planted two full five gallon buckets of seeds into our pollinator plot. Zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, snapdragons and more. We are talking somewhere around 40,000 to 50,000 seeds in the ground tonight. That is a lot of seeds and a whole lot of faith that something beautiful is coming.

Now we wait. And honestly that is one of our favorite parts.

We do this for our bees and our butterflies first and foremost. But we also do it because every summer our kids load up bouquets of fresh cut flowers and take them to local nursing homes and share them with people in our community who could use a little color in their day. This year they will be doing free will donation flower arrangements again and we cannot wait to see the smiles those bouquets bring.

There is something really special about watching your kids put seeds in the ground knowing that in a few months those same seeds become something that makes someone else happy. That is what this is all about for our family.

Check the comments for a video of them putting in the work.

Stay tuned because in a few weeks this plot is going to start showing off. πŸπŸ¦‹πŸŒΈ

*The flowers bloomed are of our pollinator garden from last year. We are hoping for 3 times the size this year.

🐝 We caught our first swarm of the season today!

A friend from church reached out and let us know there was a swarm of honeybees that had landed nearby. We grabbed our gear, headed over, and got them safely collected and into a nuke box.

We were especially thankful this one happened outside of school hours because two of our little family beekeepers got to come along and help. Moments like that are what it is all about.

This is exactly why we always say please do not spray them. These girls were just looking for a new home and tonight they are going to find one. We will be taking them to their new bee yard this evening where they will have plenty of space to build up, raise their queen, and do what God designed them to do.

This is one of our favorite parts of beekeeping. A free swarm, a call from a friend, and a happy ending for a colony that just needed a little help finding their way. We are so grateful for a community that thinks of us when they see something like this and gives these bees a chance instead of reaching for a can of spray.

If you ever see a swarm of honeybees near you please reach out to us. We will come get them every single time. 🍯

🐝 Look at all that color!

What you are seeing in this picture is a frame full of fresh pollen being packed by our bees right here in Central Nebraska. Every different color represents a different flower or plant our girls are visiting right now. Orange, yellow, cream, even purple tones. Each one tells a story about what is blooming in your own backyard.

This is exactly why local honey is different from anything on a store shelf. Your local bees are collecting your local pollen and it ends up right in your jar of honey. Studies suggest that consuming local raw honey regularly may help your body build a natural tolerance to seasonal allergens over time. The earlier in the season you start the better.

Spring is here and the pollen count is climbing. Now is the perfect time to start adding a daily spoonful of R Family Honey to your routine. Your sinuses might just thank you by fall.

We are family owned and operated right here in Central Nebraska, packed in glass jars and kept as natural as God intended. Bulk discounts are available.

🐝 Split Season at R Family Honey!

This time of year we're out doing one of the most important things a beekeeper can do. Splitting our overwintered hives.

Here's what that means and why it matters.
When a colony gets strong in the spring, the bees start making what are called swarm cells. You can see them in these pictures. They hang right off the bottom of the frame and look like a peanut shell. That's the colony raising a new queen because they're getting ready to swarm. If we let that happen, the old queen takes half the hive and flies off to find a new home and there's no guarantee they find one.

So instead of letting them swarm, we get ahead of it. We split the hive in two. One half keeps the existing queen, the other half gets a brand new mated queen that we install ourselves. You can see our new queens in the pictures too. Each one shipped safely in her own little cage, ready to be introduced to her new colony.

The result? Two healthy hives instead of one that's about to split itself and potentially lose half its bees forever.

This is the health of the hive. This is how we grow our operation responsibly. And this is why beekeeping never gets old. Every season there's something incredible happening inside these boxes.

Finally, some 60Β° weather! β˜€οΈ

We took advantage of the sunshine today to check on the girls and see how the colonies are holding up.

The Good News: The hives look incredible! They are absolutely packed with bees, which is exactly what we want to see. A full hive is a healthy, happy hive ready to take on the season.

The "Beekeeper’s Dilemma": Because the colonies are so active and healthy, they are burning through their food storage fast. It’s a bit of a catch-22: we love seeing them this busy, but it means we have to step in and supplement their food immediately. If we don’t keep those sugar reserves up right now, they could run out of energy before the first big nectar flow hits.

The Reality Check:

I’d love to say it was a perfect day, but...
πŸ—“οΈ Days since my last bee sting: 0 One of the girls decided I was being a little too nosy and gave me a spicy souvenir. Worth it for the health of the hive! 🍯✨
