This gem may have the first documented case of aragonite snowflakes in opal!

A GIA scientist recently observed delicate, snowflake-like inclusions inside a 6.85- carat black opal cabochon. Raman analysis confirmed they are aragonite.

Other fun details? Its digit-style play-of-color pattern and surface features suggest it’s from Ethiopia and was treated to produce its dark body color. As a bonus, it also contains tiny metallic pyrite inclusions—better known as fool’s gold.

A gem full of surprises, inside and out.

Jack Halpern, renowned mineral collector, has passed away at the age of 105.

The mineral world lost a legend yesterday, with the passing of “Gentleman Jack” Halpern.

His fascination with minerals began back in the 60s, and he continued to have a profound impact on the industry until his passing at 105 years old.

On a personal note, he had a profound impact on a young Rob in the 1990s, and his guidance helped inspire the direction Rob took in building The Arkenstone.

Our recent cooperation with to publish Addicted to Beauty: The Legacy of Jack Halpern, was largely a labor of love for a man who gave so much to the industry. Jack's daughter shared with us that the publication earlier this year was "Just in time. Our dad probably looked through it hundreds of times since you first produced it…and always with wonder and amazement. 💙"

A Fabergé egg known for breaking auction records will be up for sale at an upcoming Christie’s auction. “The Winter Egg” is the highlight of its “The Winter Egg and Important Works by Fabergé from a Princely Collection” sale, set to be held during “Classic Week” in London on Dec. 2.

It was commissioned by Emperor Nicholas II as an Easter gift to his mother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, in 1913, which was also the 300th anniversary of the Romanov Dynasty. The Winter Egg is expected to sell for more than £20 million ($26.8 million).

The egg is carved from rock crystal, with a frost design on its interior. The exterior features rose-cut diamond-set platinum snowflake motifs.

How could we not share a jeweled potato?! It's fabulous!

Forget the famous golden eggs—one of Fabergé’s most unusual creations was a jeweled potato that sold for nearly $100,000.

Around 1890 in Russia, master goldsmith Michael Perkhin, working for the House of Fabergé, crafted this unique piece.

It wasn't a real potato, but a hollow object meticulously carved from pink agate to look like one, complete with realistic, irregular shaping. It was just under 4 inches long.

The 'potato' featured a gold-mounted lid with a delicate, diamond-set fleur-de-lis clasp. 🥔

While most people associate Fabergé with the incredibly lavish Imperial Eggs made for the Russian royal family, the workshop also produced a wide range of what they called “objets de fantaisie,” or whimsical objects.

These pieces often took the form of animals, flowers, and even everyday items like this potato, turning the mundane into something luxurious and surprising.

In 2016, this strange little treasure was sold at a Christie’s auction for $93,750. While a huge sum, it's a fraction of the price of an Imperial Egg, some of which are valued at over $30 million. 💰

The humble jeweled potato serves as a great example of the incredible skill and playful creativity of the craftsmen at Fabergé, showing there was more to their work than just royal commissions.

Not all pearls are of equal quality or value. But what determines the value of a pearl? This is some really good information for those who want to know. 😃

Pearls are timeless classics and are prized for their luminous glow. ⚪️ Whether you’re drawn to large South Seas, dramatic Tahitians, bright akoyas or colorful freshwater pearls, here are key factors to consider when choosing a pearl:

Size: South Sea and freshwater pearls are typically the largest, reaching 15mm or more. Akoyas over 9mm are considered large.
Shape: While round pearls are the most valuable, off-round strands can look round from a distance and baroque strands can make for affordable statement pieces.
Color: Overtone, orient and popular bodycolors such as deep gold can increase the beauty and value of pearls.
Luster: This is a pearl’s most important value factor. South Seas are known for their soft, satiny glow, while akoyas are known for their bright, mirror-like shine.
Surface: This refers to whether the pearl has any surface blemishes such as dimples and scratches. High surface quality pearls should be smooth and clean.
Nacre: Consider the continuity, thickness, and condition of a pearl’s nacre when evaluating pearl quality. Avoid pearls that appear dull or chalky, or where the nucleus is visible beneath the nacre.
Matching: In a well-matched strand, pearls should be consistent in key quality factors—especially luster, shape and surface. Designers may occasionally mix colors or use graduated sizes for artistic or unique effects.
