A Gator road trip, a 45th birthday and a table full of people I’m so thankful to know.

For more than 20 years, this group of college friends have made an annual road trip to a Gator game. This year took us to Auburn and happened to fall on Alden’s 45th birthday, so of course I couldn’t let Friday night pass without setting a table and making dinner for everyone.

We started with Dad’s jalapeño pimiento cheese and guacamole, then I made a crusted beef tenderloin, twice-baked potatoes, brown sugar soy prosciutto-wrapped asparagus and baguettes with homemade dipping oil. Mama finished us off with the most delicious cheesecake with homemade ganache and caramel.

Because I love a detail, each couple had a stack of custom road-trip coasters, everyone had a Gator name card and the girls each got buttons from The Button Bar. There’s something pretty special about a tradition that has lasted more than two decades. The stories, the laughter, the same friendships and plenty of new memories added along the way. I’m just really thankful I get to be part of it now. Some traditions you start. Some you’re lucky enough to be welcomed into. Go Gators always 💙🧡

I love a home that changes a little with the seasons. Fresh flowers in the spring, pumpkins when fall rolls around, twinkle lights at Christmas and yes, orange & blue for football season. It’s never really about the decorations. It’s about enjoying the season we’re in and finding little ways to make the ordinary days feel special.

My mother-in-law surprised me this week with this perfect MacKenzie-Childs addition to our football Saturdays and I absolutely love it.

Here’s to making home special in every season and here’s to Gator gameday!

This morning I was thinking about the fact that my nephew Jack is a SENIOR in high school and will be 18 very soon, which honestly doesn’t even seem possible. Then I started looking back at pictures from his birthday parties when he was little.

If you’ve ever wondered how long I’ve loved a theme, a party, a table full of cute details and making an ordinary day feel a little more special, apparently, a very long time. When Jack was born, I think that part of me really came alive. I loved planning his parties - the invitations, the decorations, the food, the favors, all those tiny little details that probably mattered way more to me than they did to a two-year-old.

Looking back at these pictures makes me laugh because goodness, the styles have changed. The trends have changed. What we thought was cute has DEFINITELY changed. The quality of pictures has even changed. I also see something that hasn’t changed at all.

I still love gathering people.
I still love a beautifully set table.
I still love the little details.
I still love finding a reason to celebrate.
I still believe there’s something really special about making people feel loved by making a little extra fuss over them.

Maybe “All Things Abbie” started long before I ever gave it a name. Somehow that little boy I was planning birthday parties for is about to turn 18. Some things change in the blink of an eye and some of the things we love just become more a part of who we are.

After spending lots of time outdoors this weekend, I noticed a change in the air. As the a winds blew an ever so slight coolness, I said thank you. August was wonderful and filled with beautiful moments - I’m hopeful for what’s to come and thankful for what has been.

There’s just something about a Saturday afternoon spent in the kitchen making something special. Shrimp and grits with fresh-caught shrimp, stone-ground Gouda grits, homemade shrimp stock, crispy bacon on top and a nice glass of w**e next to my love.

No rushing, nowhere else to be. Just homemade stock simmering, shrimp and grits coming together and the simple pleasure of enjoying every step along the way.

Dinner? A solid 10/10.

A few weeks ago, Daddy called me and said, “I think your mother would love one of those
MacKenzie-Childs teapots in the blue. Would you order one so I can surprise her?” Of course I said yes and then I added, “But when it gets here, I want to fill it with flowers before you give it to her.”

The teapot arrived this past week and since I was already doing flowers for a party today, I filled Mama’s teapot too. Daddy came over a little while ago to pick it up and watching him leave with that pretty teapot full of flowers for her just warmed my heart. There is something so sweet about watching your parents still love each other well. Still thinking of each other. Still wanting to surprise one another with something simply because they know it will bring the other joy.

Mama called me as soon as he got home, and of course, she loved it, the teapot and the flowers. She and I definitely share a love for pretty blooms. I’m just so thankful for them. Thankful for the example of a love that, after all these years still finds little ways to say, I thought of you. I’m thankful I got to add the flowers.

This morning I found myself looking through old pictures of our back porch and some days it is still hard to believe where it started.

Calling it a “before” might even be generous. What is now truly an extension of our home started as a space that needed a whole lot of vision. Over time, it became the outdoor kitchen we imagined, my 12-foot dream table where so many people have gathered, a place for flowers and meals and celebrations and ordinary evenings at home. All the things I once pictured in my head eventually became a space we actually get to live in and enjoy.

As I flipped through those pictures this morning, I realized how much that transformation reminds me of life. There were so many years when I was single that I wondered what God was doing with my story. Years of watching life unfold differently than I thought it would. Years of learning, growing, waiting and becoming, although I certainly didn’t always recognize them as that while I was living them.

Now, on the other side of that season, married to the love of my life and so incredibly thankful for the life we share, I can look back with completely different eyes. I can see now that those years weren’t just about waiting for something to happen. They were shaping me, they taught me who I was, what mattered to me, how to create a life I loved and how to be grateful for it. So much of who I am today was built in a season I once wished I could hurry through.

Maybe that’s what struck me most about these old porch pictures. When you’re standing in the middle of the “before,” it’s hard to imagine the after. You can’t always see what something is becoming while it’s under construction.

Homes change. Spaces change. Life changes. We change. It’s an amazing gift of life when you get far enough down the road to look back and realize that even the seasons you didn’t understand were part of building something really, really beautiful.

I’ve never been much of a political person, it’s just never been my thing. I do believe in being informed, showing up and exercising the privilege we have to vote.

Today is primary election day and there are quite a few races happening right here in our little county. Alden and I actually started dating during campaign season in 2020 when he was running for City Council, so I’ve had a front-row seat to just how much time, work, courage and heart it takes to put your name on a ballot. I have a lot of respect for anyone willing to step forward and serve their community.

The part of politics I’ve never cared for is the ugliness that can come along with it. I’ll always believe that who you are, what you stand for and how you treat people should speak louder than anything you can say about someone else. You don’t have to tear another person down to show people what you have to offer.

So today, do your homework. Vote for the people whose values, character and vision you believe in. Be kind to your neighbors who may choose differently and when the votes are counted, remember that tomorrow we all still live in the same little community together.

To every candidate who has spent months giving their time, energy and heart to their campaign and putting themselves out there, I applaud you. It takes courage to run, and it takes heart to want to serve. Happy Election Day. Go vote and be kind while you’re at it.

Last night reminded me how much I love being invited into someone else’s home. We spent the evening with two couples who are dear friends of ours. They’re quite a bit younger than we are and if you looked at our lives on paper, we’re all in completely different seasons, yet around a dinner table, none of that really matters. There was good food, lots of conversation and laughter and the simple gift of just being together.

Maybe because hospitality means so much to me, I especially love seeing younger people open their homes and invite others in. Not waiting for the perfect house, the perfect season or some special occasion, just making a meal, setting a table and saying, come over.

I think we’ve made gathering together more complicated than it needs to be. Some of the sweetest evenings are simply sitting around someone’s table long after dinner is finished, talking about life. Different ages. Different seasons. Different stories. Still so much in common. More dinners at home with people we love, I’ll always say yes to that.
