Introducing Placid Boatworks Paddler of the Month for June: Brandon DeVito

You've probably heard of the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon." Around the Adirondacks, the paddling community, and the craft beer world, it's more like "Two Degrees of Brandon DeVito."

If you've spent any time paddling Adirondack waters, racing a canoe, attending a community event, or enjoying a cold beverage after a long day outdoors, chances are you've crossed paths with Brandon... or know someone who has.

Brandon has competed in the Adirondack 90-Miler Canoe Classic eight times, paddling a Placid Boatworks Shadow in every one of them. He's also the mastermind behind the legendary 91st Mile Beer Garden at the finish line, helping paddlers celebrate their accomplishments with friends old and new.

When he's not racing events like the Tupper Lake 8 Miler, Round the Mountain Canoe & Kayak Race, Long Lake Regatta, Willard Hanmer Race, or the Brandt Lake Canoe & Kayak Race, you'll often find him exploring some of the Adirondacks' most remote waters. His Placid Boatworks Spitfire has carried him through countless adventures, including pond-hopping trips in the Saint Regis Canoe Area, the Essex Chain, Little Tupper to Lake Lila and the Oswegatchie River, Madawaska, Ampersand Brook, and most recently, the Kunjamunk River. Here's a fun fact: Brandon's Spitfire turned 10 last year and has paddled over 2,430 miles!

Brandon's passion for paddling extends far beyond his own adventures. He volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America's National Camping School High Adventure Trek Leader Program, serves as the current Board Chair of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and is a tireless advocate for the Adirondack communities and waterways he loves.

A licensed guide turned beer salesman, Brandon now serves as Brand and Sales Supervisor for High Peaks Distributing in Saranac Lake. Whether he's helping organize an event, supporting a local cause, leading a paddle, or greeting racers at the finish line, he's always quick with a smile and eager to lend a hand.

Brandon embodies the spirit of Adirondack paddling: adventure, community, stewardship, and fun.

Thank you Brandon for being who you are. We're proud to have you in the Placid Boatworks family.

At Placid Boatworks, we’ve always worked hard to keep our canoes priced as fairly as possible while continuing to build the lightweight, high-performance boats we’re known for.

Due to continuing increases in material costs, we find it necessary to increase the price of all canoe models by $200 beginning June 1st.

If you’ve been considering a new canoe, orders placed on or before May 31st will still receive current pricing.

Trust us — we don’t like price increases any more than you do. The good news is that even with this adjustment, Placid Boatworks canoes remain priced below comparable pack canoes.

We truly appreciate your support, your understanding, and your passion for paddling.

We hope everyone had a meaningful Memorial Day spent with family and friends. As we enjoy time on the water and the freedoms we cherish, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Thank you.

Introducing our Placid Paddler of the Month: Morgan Hoven

Some paddlers build an impressive resume on the water. Others build an impressive life off the water. Morgan has done both.

Morgan’s list of achievements is remarkable by any standard. A scholar All-American wrestler at SUNY Oneonta, he has carried that same grit, discipline, and competitive fire into paddling—logging eight 90-Miler Adirondack Canoe Classic finishes in his Shadow pack canoe, winning his age group every time, and earning overall packboat victories more than once. For most paddlers, that would define a lifetime of accomplishment.

But that’s not what defines Morgan.

What stands out most is the life he’s built around family, community, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. These days, Morgan has stepped back from racing—not because the competitive fire is gone, but because his energy is focused where it matters most: raising John and Aila with his wife Angie, teaching U.S. History at Palmyra-Macedon Middle School, and helping run their family farm, Embers Rising, where they produce maple syrup and grow blueberries, mushrooms, and Christmas trees.

And when he finds time to paddle, you’ll often find him in the Shadow pack canoe—likely somewhere around the Fish Creek Campground area, one of his favorite places to be on the water.

What Morgan values most about Placid Boatworks isn’t the racing—it’s the people. The friendships. The camaraderie. The sense of belonging that comes from a shared love of paddling and wild places.

That says a lot about Morgan—because in the end, while he’s won plenty of races, what he values most can’t be measured at a finish line.

Character. Family. Community.

That’s what makes him our Paddler of the Month.
