I stopped trying to paint every flower perfectly and focused instead on loose shapes, layered color, and expressive marks.

Loose expressive snail!
I made myself a list of things to paint in September, and I’m going to try to paint one every night even if I only have 5 minutes.
Last night I painted this snail.
Let’s see how many I actually get through this month.

I almost didn’t post this one.
I’m not really happy with how it turned out, but not every painting has to be a masterpiece.
This one reminded me to keep my shapes simpler and not keep working on it just because I think it needs “more. Can you tell me what it is?

We’re painting loose, expressive sunflowers together on Zoom on Monday, September 14, at 8 PM EST.

When a watercolor starts feeling flat, I don’t always reach for more paint.

Sometimes it needs a few lines, scratches, scribbles, or darker marks to bring back texture and movement.

Mark making is one of my favorite ways to loosen things up without overworking the watercolor.

Save this for the next time your painting feels like it’s missing something.

Sometimes giving yourself less time means less overthinking.
I gave myself 10 minutes for this one. No sketch, no trying to make every mark perfect...just paint, respond, and keep moving.

Somewhere between the watercolor blooms, scribbles, marks and layers, the flowers started to appear. This is probably my favorite way to paint without trying to make every flower look like a flower.

If you want to learn how to paint more loosely, freely, and confidently, this is exactly what we’ll practice in my next live Zoom painting class.

We’ll paint this expressive sunflower together, exploring loose brushwork, color, mark-making, and possibly the hardest lesson of all: knowing when to stop messing with it.
