When British archaeologist Howard Carter opened King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 he discovered thousands of priceless treasures. But one piece stood out above the rest. At the center of the pharaoh’s golden breastplate sat a sacred scarab carved from a mysterious yellow green stone. Nobody could identify it.

The mineral was first reported in 1813 by A.F. Gehlan and J.N. Fuchs in Germany, and was named for the Greek word meaning “worm”. This was referring to the stones tendency to curl when heated with a blowtorch.

Kummakivi, the balancing rock in Ruokolahti, Finland is huge! It's about 23 feet (7 meters) long and rests on the tiny, steeply pitched footprint of a smaller mound of rock that rises from the forest floor. The balancing boulder appears to be about to slide right off its perch, but it can't be moved — at least by human muscles.

But the real question is, how did it get there?

People have probably always wondered that, but we'll never know because it has been there approximately 12,000 years — way before we started recording anything. However, Finnish folklore says that some giants or trolls carried the rock to the forest and balanced it on its plinth. These days geologists say it was deposited by a retreating glacier at the end of the last ice age — and as we know, a glacier is basically the only thing as strong as a giant or a troll.

Thanks to the discovery of a mineral called ringwoodite, a team of scientists made a surprising discovery that could change how we think about Earth’s water reserves

The researchers found strong evidence that huge amounts of water — comparable to several oceans — are hidden deep within the Earth’s mantle beneath the United States.

The water discovered in the mantle is not in a form familiar to us – it is not liquid, ice, or v***r. Instead, it is trapped inside the molecular structure of the minerals in the mantle rock.

The immense pressure created by 250 miles of solid rock, along with temperatures above 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, causes water molecules to split and form hydroxyl radicals (OH) that can be bound into a mineral’s crystal structure.
