My sweet neighbors have a great story about their cat. Let’s just say Rufus has many of the same qualities his predecessor had, namely he does not bother my chickens and gives me “I heard you say hi, but don’t expect me to be at your beck and call” glance after said greeting when I saw him from my tomato garden.

What does this have to do with quilting? The same thing that me sharing a book I’ve read or movie I’ve enjoyed or gardening. Quilting doesn’t have to be our only common interest. We might help each other outside of quilting, too. I love to learn, especially if you do something I don’t do. Teach me. And I’ll answer your questions and teach you in a way YOU understand. I loved substitute teaching when most of the kids would understand a math concept (as an example) and I’d have those students continue working independently. If you didn’t understand, come up to the table and I’ll show you another way. Sometimes I had to figure out a way to teach a challenged learner a way I hadn’t taught before.

If you feel like you’re just not getting it, let me know so I can teach you in your learning language. If you e struggled with someone else before, try me and you just might find I’m your gal😉

One of the things I do well, but don’t talk about is finding a way to make things work. It’s like it becomes a challenge when someone says “you can’t do that!”

You’ll never make a living quilting. I kind of didn’t have a choice. Newly divorced, I needed an income. I prayed as if everything depended on God and worked like everything depended on me. He makes up for my shortcomings on the daily.

Sometimes it’s scary taking that leap of faith, but the rewards are visible. Try it. I struggle asking for help, except when I ask Him. So when bricks are thrown, stand on them. With God, NOTHING is impossible.

I could not get my home computer to print out my marketing challenge outline so I took it to work and printed it there. The PDF was still on my screen and at lunch I was so excited to share the 5 things I can’t live without. Came home, looked at my hard copy, and that is NOT on there. Anywhere! But I’m gonna make it work with today’s prompt which is spending money on things that don’t really solve the problem.

1. I like my mitered binding corners to be sewn. I don’t like a fold. I like a crisp sewn seam. No matter the angle, this tool solves that problem for me, and it does multiple angles!

2. This is today’s drink jug. I also have some stainless steel ones that keep ice for 3 days! You need to stay hydrated and I like my cold drinks icy cold. Bonus? They don’t sweat, even when I am🤫🤭

3. Audiobooks. I can put in 10-12 hour days with a good audiobook. My eldest daughter-in-law says she has been listening almost exclusively to audiobooks for the last month, to the exclusion of TV, but getting the housework done, errands run, etc. after putting in a full day teaching 3rd grade.

4. My sewing kit. I held it in my hand to show you why it goes with me everywhere. No need to lug around a big box. Wind some thread on bobbins so you have black, white, and tan, and you can fix anything on the fly. The tin is repurposed from a multi-pack machine needle purchase. The lovely gifted me the needle minder. Brilliant!! The little square of felt holds my threaded needles. The white tube? A gift from another friend. Winds up like a lipstick, but holds my heavy duty needles.

5. Food. Especially with family and/or good friends. You can come up with solutions to so many things if you just set down the phone and share a meal.

Sometimes spending a little more money on a good thing ends up saving money in the long run over buying just the cheapest thing. Or the viral trendy thing. And as I told a new client I’ve been helping get shirts together for her T-shirt quilt, answering questions so she understand some quilt terms for fabric choices, the only stupid questions are the ones you don’t ask. They can also be the most expensive😉 Ask me. I’ll help until you get it🥰

Today’s prompt was to tell why I have strong opinions about what I do. And then I stumbled upon this cute quote. Some things I do to keep with community uniformity, so to speak. I’ve talked before about needing the backing and batting to be bigger than the top so the machine can have unimpeded access to the quilt top. Some are things I’ve found regular customers felt simplified expectations. I can be hard and fast, but flexible when necessary. One hard and fast rule is I do not conduct business on my Sabbath. Customers appreciated my flexibility on pick up times the other six days of the week.

Another hard and fast rule is my pricing. I believe it to be fair and am happy to help you figure out the most economical way to do you project. If you bring me four placemats and a table runner, you will be charged a minimum charge for each piece. If you ask me beforehand how to make it more economical, we will both be pleased with the outcome. Think of it like this: You go to the grocery store with a list, you don’t go to the store for one item, take it home, and go back for the next item on the list, and so on and so on. If I can’t help you find a solution, I won’t stay in business long.

Today I’m going to tell you how I’ve failed. I’m using this picture because it has a failure in it, even if you can’t see it. I generally don’t point out failures. We can successfully beat ourselves up in spectacular fashion without inviting others to that party. I hear or read not long ago, “It isn’t failure if you learned something” and that rang a true note with me.

I learned early on, and made it a hard and fast rule, not to work or keep working when I’m tired. I’d inevitably end up spending copious amounts of time frog stitching because I want to finish one last seam, but in my exhaustion, sewed that last seam incorrectly. It’s why I used this picture. I followed the rules and didn’t sew exhausted

Wanna know what I did do? Thank you for asking! My BeReal alert went off (sorry, only 2 neighbors and a handful of coworkers et to follow me there🥰) and I snapped my exhausted pic. When it populated, my neighbor’s pic was of her brandspankingnew (it’s a word, look it up) 18 needle embroidery machine. A quick text and two minutes later we were squeaking in her basement❤️❤️❤️ I took over my project and told her I’d hit a wall and asked her to help me make sense of the pattern. Fresh eyes and the (well written to non exhausted eyes) pattern made sense. I did not come home and sew it. I even purposely@left it upstairs, away from my machine so I wouldn’t be tempted.

I’ve told frustrated clients and students, there are no mistakes in quilting, only new patterns. It isn’t failure if you’ve learned something. And follow my grandson’s 4 year old wisdom on the dance floor “When I fall down, I just make it part of my moves!”

Someone leaves me notes, from time to time, on my computer or desk. Always positive and kind and making me smile. Today a student/client was kind enough to comment on yesterday’s post that set me up for today’s prompt.

I used to teach at a local quilt shop and one of my favorite classes was when people brought in whatever project they wanted to work on, were struggling with, needed to finish, couldn’t figure out… You see where I’m going with this. When I saw or felt their frustration beginning to overwhelm them, especially when it involved unpicking, I’d have them tell me about the project (or something else) and start unpicking for them. The focus was off the frustration and watching how I did it. When it was ready to be resewn, the anxiety had subsided and they got back down to progression.

When they realized it was just an inconvenience and not utter failure, the project became doable again. One student could not grasp the idea of keeping a consistent seam width. I sat down at her machine, she looking over my shoulder, and sewed the correct seam where she could see the difference. It sounds simple, but she was an extreeeemely visual learner. Until she could see it, it didn’t make sense to her.

I have a friend who sews quite well, but what I admire about another of her creative sides is her watercolors. Painting a wall is my best skill with a brush, but if I ever wanted to learn her skill, I’d want her to be my teacher because she’s made “all the boo boos”, and still keeps honing her craft. You can get there if you look at others’ work (that you might like to emulate) as Masters or Ph.Ds. You’re in kindergarten and that’s where the fun begins!

One of the things I love helping newbies understand is why I need at least 3” on all sides of the backing and batting, more if it’s Minky so that if it “hourglasses” after I’ve loaded it, there will still be enough when completely quilted. I use Red Snappers to load because it’s sooooo much easier than pinning. This sweet client put a pin in what she felt was the top of her backing (Minky) for grain (thinking for petting your cat or dog, head to tail, not vice versa!🤭) purposes. The red snappers claim almost an inch on the top and trailing edges. The side clamps need to give the machine head space to move freely to the edge of the quilt top.

After load the top, I preview thread colors. With the depth of the Minky pile, the bobbin thread will barely be visible, even if you pet it the wrong way. I’m letting her choose between a dark or medium grey. The spider web quilting will show up more in lighter places, but blend in the others. It’s all about the texture on the back. Stay tuned. This one’s gonna be a beauty!👻🎃
