Can You Guess That Plant? 🤔

No cheating! Google. 😂

Here are your clues...

•This fuzzy pod contains hundreds of flat, overlapping seeds that each carry their own built-in parachute.

•Snap it open and you'll find a white latex sap. It's the plant's chemical defense system, and while it helps deter hungry animals, it can irritate skin and eyes—so it's best not to rub your face after handling it.

•The chemicals in this plant don't just protect it... one well-known insect actually steals those toxins and stores them in its own body as protection from predators.

•Before synthetic fibers, the silky floss inside these pods was used to stuff life jackets during World War II because it's naturally buoyant and water resistant.

•Despite its reputation for being "just a w**d," it's considered a keystone native plant, supporting an astonishing number of insect species throughout its life cycle.

•This particular species spreads by underground rhizomes, often creating large colonies. What looks like dozens of plants may actually be one connected plant underground.

•Its flower clusters are famous for smelling like vanilla and are among the most fragrant of our native wildflowers. Some of my personal favorites!!!

•Not all of the varieties produce white sap! There are around 140 different types.

Bonus: This species has one of the most complex pollination systems in North America. Instead of loose pollen, insects accidentally carry entire packets of pollen from flower to flower. Can you name those pollen packets?

👇 Think you know it? Drop your guess below! Bonus points if you can name the exact variety!

Hey plant friends!

I'm not going to lie...after weeks of heat and drought, I about gave up on tackling our own garden. 🤣

But with milder temperatures and lots of rain in the forecast this week, I decided it was finally time to get back out there.

This morning I spent some time deadheading and giving many of our plants their summer haircut in hopes of encouraging one more beautiful flush of blooms this fall.

Many flowering plants get tired after putting so much energy into blooming all spring and early summer. Removing spent flowers helps redirect that energy into fresh growth and new blooms!

Some of the plants that benefit from a good deadheading or trim right now include:

🌼 Coneflowers
🌼 Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susans)
🌼 Salvia
🌼 Catmint
🌼 Bee Balm
🌼 Coreopsis
🌼 Yarrow
🌼 Shasta Daisies
🌼 Zinnias
🌼 Marigolds
🌼 Lantana
🌼 Pentas
🌼 Verbena

Now is a great time to walk through your garden and:
✨ Remove faded blooms
✨ Cut back tired flower stems
✨ Remove dead or damaged growth
✨ Apply a light feeding to encourage fresh growth

This week is the perfect opportunity to give your garden a little TLC before it starts gearing up for fall. You might be surprised how many plants reward you with another round of blooms!

So...who else has been pretending not to notice their garden the past few weeks? 🙋‍♀️😂

Good morning!

We're still here. This off season has been busier than expected. 😅

Enjoy some pictures from our container garden area this morning and a tiny sneak peak at what's growing.

Six weeks and counting until we open for our fall season! We can't wait to see you.

Catching up on some garden tasks today after being in and out all last week.

These zinnias are looking absolutely amazing!

Fun fact: Persian Carpet zinnias are my personal favorite. Their blooms may be small, but each one has its own unique mix of colors and patterns. Mazurkia is a very close second—they're just so cheerful!

How is everyone else's garden holding up with all this heat? Have your flowers powered through, or are they looking a little tired?
