I just got in a 1947 Chevy radio model 985793 from a new customer. Sorry, no picture right now because it’s all taken apart. As usual it’s going to need all its paper and electrolytic capacitor replaced and a part in the DC to DC converter. I don’t know yet if it’s going to need any tubes. More on this radio later as the electronic restoration proceeds.

I’m still working on the Silvertone radio from 1937. I’m down to the last 4 capacitors which are a bit difficult to replace due to their location. Beyond that there is some cracked up power cord cable inside the chassis and the line cord needs to be replaced too. Once that’s done I can replace the missing tubes and test it out. The dial scales are on a plastic drum that is supposed to rotate as the band switch changes bands. However the cord that rotates the drum has snapped. I’ll replace that cord once I know the radio is working. Below is an almost after picture of under the chassis.

Also recently a customer brought me their 1970s Realistic clock radio because the grain of wheat dial lamp was burned out. I replaced it with a bright white LED and dropping resistor. The LED lights up the entire dial. It looks good.

I recently serviced a Fada model 252, 6 tube table radio ($59.99 + sales tax, NY only) only to discover that the tuning capacitor was damaged. So then my customer wanted me to add an audio input jack so he could simulate the radio playing. These radios have what’s called a “hot chassis” where one wire from the AC line cord connects to the chassis. So this required me to build him an isolation transformer unit and he was very happy how it turned out. I charge $50 (+ sales tax, NY state only) for the switched isolation transformer unit and nothing to add the jack.

Don’t forget about my 5 and 6 tube table radio restoration specials. $49.99 + sales tax (NY state only) + return shipping for the 5 tube and $59.99 + sales tax (NY State only) + return shipping for the 6 tube. These electronic restoration specials include the replacement of all paper and electrolytic capacitors, the paper and electrolytic capacitors, cleaning the controls and alignment only if absolutely necessary, cleaning the tube sockets if necessary, the dial lamp(s) if necessary and captive power cord, if necessary. Usually all the tubes are good. However, if the radio needs 1 or more tubes replaced they, as well as all other parts that might need to be replaced, will cost extra.

Most of the time replacing paper and electrolytic capacitors is all an antique radio needs.

Most 5 and 6 tube “hot chassis” radios made from the 1940s thru the 1960s usually qualify for these specials.

Sorry I haven’t posted for a while. I’m still working on a lot of items. I just received an interesting multi-band transistor radio made by KOYO. I’ll take some pictures of it. I also did take pictures of that large 3-gang 72 plate tuning capacitor in the Clarion radio from the 1930s. Not counting the shaft, it’s about 8” in length and a couple of inches wide. At first almost all the plates were touching. It was kind of like adjusting spokes in a bicycle wheel. But I had finally gotten all the plates straight. But then after sitting a while maybe a couple of plates touched in a couple of places. But compared to how it was, it was fine. It has since been sent back to that customer. But I haven’t heard anything about it. I’ll try to post something more often so you know I’m still here.

I just straightened the plates in the tuning capacitor of a Clarion JR AC-60 cathedral radio. It wasn’t easy. This is a huge old three gang tuning capacitor with 24 plates in each section. 36 plates in the stators, 36 plates in the rotors. Just about all of them were touching between rotor and stator. The only way to get this straightened was to remove it from the chassis. I connected each section individually to a continuity tester, turned the tuning control, listened and used a bright light to carefully bent the plates in the rotors and stators, where they were touching and the tester was beeping. It’s kind of like adjusting spokes on a bent bicycle wheel. But sometimes adjustments had to be made in a few different places on the same plate. After a few hours of careful bending (manipulating plates) no beeping was heard from the continuity tester as each section was tuned through it’s entire range. After re-installing the tuning capacitor into the chassis the radio now works very well. I also lubricated the tuning cpacitor bearings. Another reason why the tuning capacitors have to be disconnected is because each one has an RF coil (actually a transformer) winding connected to it, which kind of looks like a short circuit, masking any continuity readings.
I also had to replace all 11 capacitors wax potted capacitors. A huge can on top of the chassis contained and still contains the 5 filter capacitors. New film types are much tinier. So they fit under the chassis. My customer didn’t need them to be replaced inside the capacitor can. But if anyone wanted them to be replaced inside the cans, I could do that for an extra charge. There were two smaller cans on the inside of one of the sides of the chassis each containing and still containing 3 “bypass” capacitors. These cans are actually box shaped. One, or more, of the filter capacitors probably overheated in the past because a huge pile of wax had dripped out of the filter capacitor can and was on the inside of the chassis’ bottom cover. It was easy to remove.

I forgot to say this earlier:
There were three screws holding in this tuning capacitor (there still are) and 4 wires to disconnect. But in order to get to two of the screws, the covers had to be removed from two of the RF transformers and one of the two RF coils had to be removed from the chassis and moved out of the way to get to the screw. But the RF coil didn’t have to be disconnected to do this, just angled slightly to get a screwdriver in there to remove the screw.
This was done in reverse to put the tuning capacitor back into the chassis.
