"Crane with Nestlings in a Pine Tree" a cira 1930s woodblock pritn in a vertical ōban (ōban tate-e) format, by Ohara Koson (小原 古邨; 1877-1945), a Japanese painter and print designer of the late 19th and early 20th century from the Kanazawa (金沢市), the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture (石川県), who was part of the Shin-hanga (新版画, New prints) movement

Ohara Koson was best known as a master of kachō-e (bird and flower) designs, most commonly - but not only - published, like this picture, by Watanabe Shōzaburō, the pre-eminent Shin-hanga publisher of his age,

Throughout a prolific career, in which he created around 500 prints, he went by three different titles - Ohara Hōson (小原豊邨), Ohara Shōson (小原祥邨) and Ohara Koson (小原 古邨).

Repentance (1917) is a Symbolist cityscape by Nicholas Roerich, painted in the year of the Russian Revolution. It shows a snow-covered town or monastery with heavy, dark architecture and a small, solitary figure near the steps, creating a mood of somber reflection and spiritual turning.
 
The painting is often grouped with other wartime/revolutionary works like The Holy Island (1917), reflecting Roerich’s desire to distance himself from worldly turmoil and seek a higher, spiritual perspective .

 In 1917, as the Bolshevik Revolution unfolded, Roerich was already turning inward toward spiritual movements, Theosophy, and later Buddhism; this inner shift is visible in the painting’s mood of quiet, almost penitential stillness.

In Roerich’s view, “peace is not simply an absence of conflict but a state of unity in which spiritual balance is attained”

In his essays Roerich repeatedly stresses:
“The path to enlightenment, spiritual ascent, the sacred signs of Satyum, Shivam, Sundaram (Peace, Beauty, Truth) – these are the symbolic themes …”

Tennessee Williams surprised me when he suggested I read the works of Raymond Chandler. “Why are you so surprised?” he asked me. “No one dominates a page as he does. Complete control. Wit and style and a narrative like the sleekest train.” Truman Capote was also an advocate of Chandler’s work. Today is his birthday. Check him out.

Here’s a great quote from Chandler’s notebooks: “There are two kinds of truth; the truth that lights the way and the truth that warms the heart. The first of these is science, and the second is art. Without art science would be as useless as a pair of high forceps in the hands of a plumber. Without science art would become a crude mess of folklore and emotional quackery.”

Mark L. Prophet

Mark was born on Christmas Eve, 1918, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. As a child, his mystical nature was already visible — he communed with angels and nature spirits, and built a private altar in his attic where he prayed for hours.

As a young man, he was approached by the ascended master El Morya, who came to him because the Brotherhood was in need of a messenger. Mark could not yet reconcile this Eastern-robed figure with his lifelong devotion to Jesus, and he dismissed the encounter. El Morya returned later, and this time Mark accepted him as his teacher.

In 1958, El Morya called him to Washington, D.C. to found The Summit Lighthouse. That same year, Mark began publishing the Pearls of Wisdom — weekly letters carrying the teachings of the ascended masters to students around the world.
Mark passed on February 26, 1973. He is known today as the ascended master Lanello.

Mark had served as a messenger in earlier lifetimes. As the prophet Noah, he warned his generation of the coming flood. As the Egyptian pharaoh Ikhnaton, he introduced the worship of one God to a culture built on many gods.

His soul has moved through many other significant embodiments, including Mark the Evangelist, Origen of Alexandria, Clovis, Saladin, Louis XIV, and the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
