Did you know.......

"Decoration Day" began after the Civil War as a day to honor fallen soldiers. After the Civil War ended in 1865, communities across the United States started holding springtime tributes where people decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. These ceremonies were often called โ€œDecoration Day.โ€

Over time it became a national day of remembrance for all military members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Key moments in its history:

๐ŸŽ–1860s: Local โ€œDecoration Dayโ€ ceremonies begin after the Civil War
๐ŸŽ–1868: General Logan establishes a national observance on May 30
๐ŸŽ–World War I era: Holiday broadens to honor all fallen U.S. service members
๐ŸŽ–1971: Memorial Day becomes an official federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May

Weโ€™re grateful for those heroes and for the families who carry their memory every day.
