Marigold cloth covered boards with gilt decoration. Top edge gilt. Only very slight rubbing at head and tail. Unusually bright and clean. Bottom right edge of front board bumped approx. 1/2 in. 8vo (crown octavo), 209 pp., blank [1], advertisements [6]. Near Fine. A beautiful book.

Containing the latest and most accurate observations on the character, genius, and present state of the people and government of that country. Early American travel account. Full tree calf, red title plate and gilt lettering at spine. Ex libris bookplates at front endpaper. FFEP starting to separate but holding. Corners bumped, front joint split. Block is tanned, few spots of foxing. 8vo, 416 pp. Overall, a Good and charming piece.

Happy Birthday, Ambrose Bierce! Born this day in 1842, in Meigs County, Ohio, the son of Marcus Aurelius and Laura (Sherwood) Bierce. He was a Civil War veteran, mining engineer, assayer, journalist, author, cynic, and sharp critic of corrupt authority. Independent in his politics, he thought the political game being played by all parties was most reprehensible. He had no objection to one’s love of country, but he saw no reason why love should not be so extended as to embrace all humanity. His wicked wit and satirical expression in his written works earned him the moniker, Bitter Bierce. His short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, is revered by many for its irregular pattern and twist ending. “Like a pantoum, the conclusion brings the narrative back to its beginning.” An early psychological thriller of sorts, its style and rhythm are often imitated. The story serves as the inspiration for our bookstore. Shortly after his 71st birthday in 1913, he set out for Mexico, stating, “I’m on my way to Mexico because I like the game.” After crossing into Mexico in 1914, he was never heard from again. His disappearance remains a mystery that adds to the specter of his stirring and occasionally supernatural works.
