Quick Winter Garden Tutorial!
I have several strategies for planting the veggie garden. First is
🥕Intensive planting or high-density planting. This gets a lot of production out of a small area. Intensive planting covers a lot of the soil which can deter pests, especially four legged ones, and protects the soil from erosion and evaporation. I added some straw to help with that too. This high density planting strategy leads right into the next which is
🦠Bio-diversity. Planting as many unique plants as you can. This attracts more beneficials and confuses pests. Plants also bring their own micro biome to the soil so the more players the better. The natural world around us is crazy diverse and our gardens should be too. This plays into the next strategy which is
🕷️Natural Pest Management. Interplanting different plants together, planting red or purple plants with green, adding herbs and flowers all deters pests. Herbs and flowers also attract
🐝 Beneficials! Flowers and herbs like alyssum, yarrow and thyme make sure your garden brings all the girls to the yard. Adding fennel, dill, parsley attracts butterflies. And all of this brings
🌸Beauty! Healthy productive gardens are beautiful. Beautiful gardens have healthy plants because we always plant seasonally. Which is why I think about
⏰Timing. Ask yourself where is this install date landing in the season and how do I want to use this garden in the near future. Spring is only 60 days away so I want mostly plants that are gonna be in and out (lettuce, tender herbs) or that don’t take up too much space (onion and carrot) in the garden. We are also always thinking about
🏡Space. How big will these plants get when mature? Will they need supports, like my peas? Will they get too big for my other plants? I decided against broccoli this time around as it gets too big for this garden and its growing time will butt into my spring plantings. Lastly,
🥗Plant what you like to eat. Your garden is for you. It’s not to impress anyone. Grow what is worth it for you.
Love your garden and visit it often.
Be seduced by its wonders.
And share your bounty.
I do love you a lot you know. 🩷💚
