Long story short, I was working on a collab with a huge billion dollar corpo and they ghosted me and did the product collab with another soulless corpo. The worst part? They totally ghosted me! No explanation, just silence after samples, discussions about logistics, marketing, product lines, using my San Diego Comic Con booth for marketing and more.
Well, part of me was mad, but mostly just disgusted at the disrespect corporations constantly show independent creators. One good thing came out of that experience. I realized I could be doing more with my SDCC booth. So the Xolotl initiative was born. Starting this summer I will be using part of my booth to allow 2 emerging creators to set up and sell their stuff. If it goes well then I want to help more creators and work on some mentorships throughout the year for people from communities historically and currently marginalized and used by big corporations. I already have the two creators lined up for this summer and I will share them later!
So keep an eye out for more info on Xolotl in the future. Through Xolotl, my goal is to highlight creations from people of color, indigenous, first people, immigrants, students, foster youth, LBGTQ+, the underrepresented, the beginners, the veterans, the outsiders, everything in between and more…
