Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.—1 Chronicles 16:10Thoughts on Today's Verse brings you joy? What is your source of personal glory? Do you glory and rejoice in your accomplishments, your wealth, your status, your looks, your piety, your humility, your...? In the old hymn "Beneath the Cross of Jesus," we each confess, "My glory, all the Cross." That's what Christians mean when we "Glory in his holy name." Our full understanding of God's holy name has dramatically been expanded by Jesus. He taught us to not only reverence the name of God but also call him "Abba" Father. Any other cause of joy and basis for boasting are merely passing illusions. For those whose hearts seek the LORD, glory is found in reverencing the holy name of the Father who gave up his precious Son so we could be his children. He loves us that much, and more: we will one day share in his glory (Colossians 3:1-4). Incredible!My Prayer have blessed me in many ways, Abba Father. How can I ever begin to thank you properly? I confess that I sometimes seek notoriety and glory even though I know such notoriety is fleeting and often only the false flattery of those who want something from me. But deep in my heart, dear God, I know my true glory is rooted in the adoption covenant you signed by your grace. Thank you! I myself am going."—Zechariah 8:21Thoughts on Today's Verse Messianic message from Zechariah anticipates the day of the LORD's redemption. Many different people from all over the world will come looking for God's great mercy. God's people will have one key phrase on their hearts: "Let's go seek the presence of God. I'm going; why don't you join me?" As believers, we know Jesus has come, died, and was raised from the dead. We know Jesus is returning with salvation for all who truly know and follow him. Let's ask others to join us to go and share the great celebration of grace and salvation at Jesus' return!My Prayer Father, I seek your presence daily in my life. You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.—Nehemiah 9:6Thoughts on Today's Verse faced what seemed like an impossible task. He knew, however, how important it was for God's people to remember how big their God is! At first glance, our praise is pretty irrelevant to everyone and everything. That praise, however, matters to us, those closest to us, and amazingly, it matters to God. In a universe so vast, so much bigger than Nehemiah could have dared to imagine, what is our small voice and song of praise? The billions of stars and innumerable creatures of the immense seas all cry out that our Creator is LORD. God constantly receives the worship of the angels and all the heavenly beings. So, what difference does it make if we praise God? To the universe, to be blunt, it doesn't matter. But it does to us! Praise awakens us to the incredible power, yet nearness, of God. Amazingly, our praise also matters greatly to our LORD, who longs to be our Father and wants to do his wondrous works in our world through us!My Prayer and amazing God, you alone are LORD — LORD of all creation and LORD of my life. You are praised by all you have made. Your works cry out and declare your creative genius and your loving kindness. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.—2 Peter 1:21Thoughts on Today's Verse did Scripture come from? What is the basis of our faith in the Bible and the Gospel? Peter wants us to realize that the prophets of ancient times, God's servants, didn't bake up their own private recipes for their prophecies. Instead, they could only move and respond to what God was doing in them, not what they wanted to do or say. They were human, but their messages were God's word because the Holy Spirit moved them to speak and guided them in what they said. This makes what we have in Scripture from the prophets more than precious. We have been given the very words of God! (2 Timothy 3:16-17)My Prayer God, thank you for inspiring ordinary people to give us your extraordinary message in common, everyday language. Thank you for delivering your essential messages to us in the Bible through your prophets. Thank you for preserving your truth through persecution, hardship, and opposition. Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down.—Proverbs 26:20Thoughts on Today's Verse...Ol' Smokey The Bear said: "Only you can prevent forest fires!" Basically, that's what the Wiseman of Proverbs says about gossip. We can turn down the heat, douse the fire, and let the quarrel die. How? By not supplying juicy morsels of gossip, ditching the urge to spread destructive innuendos, and refusing to keep alive an ugly rumor. Without gossip, the bitterness of a rivalry can dissolve, and relationships can mend.My Prayer me, O God, for I have sometimes kept gossip alive or entertained a conversation with someone who gossips. Please bless and heal those whom I have wounded with my participation in gossip. Give me the strength to say only what is helpful to bless others according to their needs, the courage to mend the relationships I have damaged because of my reckless words, and the wisdom to know how to discourage those seeking to spread gossip in front of me. [Jesus continued explaining his parable of the soils, saying,] "The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful."—Matthew 13:22Thoughts on Today's Verse sorts of things can distract us from Kingdom matters. The wear and tear of everyday life can make it hard to keep our spiritual focus. In an affluence-driven society, our desire for riches, our pursuit of material things, and our selfishness with wealth can entangle us. The worries of this life can stifle our faith. Eventually, the fruitfulness of the Gospel is choked out, and we lose our spiritual vitality. Our most valuable riches are found in Jesus, not in stuff that decays or can be stolen from us. If he is our priceless treasure, so his Kingdom must be our highest priority, then we can handle the other things that come our way (Matthew 6:33).My Prayer Father, please help me faithfully use the blessings you have lavishly poured upon me. Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old.—Lamentations 5:21Thoughts on Today's Verse these words were first spoken, the prophet and his people were focused on God's restoration of Israel back to their place in Judea, their prominence in the world of nations, their beauty in daily life, and their worship and security in the Temple of the LORD. From our vantage point, this prayer can be our prayer as well. Restoration can mean Christ's return, which brings us home to God. On that day, every barrier standing between God and us will fall. Our mortality will be swallowed up in victory. We will see God face to face and walk with him in the cool of the day as his perfect children. Maranatha — O LORD come (1 Corinthians 16:22-24 NRSV). And may that day come soon!My Prayer and awesome God, I know a huge gulf stands between your perfection and my limitations. Yet, dear Father, I believe you have spanned that gulf with your grace. [Paul spoke to the educated people of Athens and explained,] "God [made all people from one man] so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us."—Acts 17:27Thoughts on Today's Verse seeking God longs to be sought! God placed his fingerprints all over the universe and gave us places to find life and pursue meaning in that life. He had a purpose for this plan: God wanted us to seek him, the One behind it all. While God is never far away from us, he longs to be sought and found by us. When each of us seeks after God, we not only bless him but also live out one of our life's essential purposes!My Prayer Father, I long to know you more completely — as the old hymn* says to Jesus: "Beyond the sacred page, I seek Thee LORD. My spirit pants for thee O living Word." Loving Father, I ask that your presence would be recognizable in my daily life. I truly want to get to know you, even as I am known by you. This is what the LORD says to the house of Israel: "Seek me and live; do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba."—Amos 5:4-5Thoughts on Today's Verse...Do you "go to church"? I hope not! Don't get me wrong; I'm not advocating you skip worship and fellowship this Sunday! We're told not to forsake gathering together as believers (Hebrews 10:25). But when we assemble as a body of believers, we gather together for encouragement and meeting with God (1 Corinthians 14). We're not GOING to church; we ARE the church! (The New Testament never used the word church to refer to a building!) God warned his people in Old Testament times that simply going to the places of worship and going through the motions was worthless. As much as they valued these holy places — Bethel, Gilgal, and Beersheba — they needed to seek the LORD to find genuine life! I believe that is precisely what God would have us do. And as we seek him together, we get to share fellowship, comfort, and encouragement with each other. As we do, we discover life with him!My Prayer and loving Father, as I face this week's struggles, it is comforting to know I am never away from your loving presence. I love those times when I meet with other believers in your presence, and our worship is powerful and encouraging. While I know you are always with us when we gather together, sometimes my heart, life circumstances, and relationship issues derail my awareness of your presence. This week, dear Father, I pray for our worship assembly to be vibrant and powerful. I pray for your presence to be palpably near. Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.—1 Chronicles 16:11Thoughts on Today's Verse restoring the presence of God to their people through the Ark of the Covenant, David and Asaph, gave the people these verses as a song to perpetually remind them of the importance of seeking God's strength and presence (face) because:
Our strength is found in the LORD's presence (2 Corinthians 12:8-10; Ephesians 6:10).Our grace and mercy come from the LORD's loving presence (Isaiah 63:7-9; 2 John 1:3).Our hope centers on seeing the LORD face-to-face in his presence and knowing him even as we are known by him (1 John 3:1-2). As children of God, we can look to the LORD and his might. We don't have to rely only on our own strength and wisdom to chart our paths. As we seek the LORD's face while leaning on his gracious and powerful presence, the LORD leads us with his Spirit, empowering us as he works in our lives for our ultimate good (Romans 8:12-17, 28-29).My Prayer...O LORD, I know you created me uniquely as you fashioned me in my mother's womb (Psalm 139:13-17). Yet I know I can never have the freedom or creativity in my life that you long for me to discover unless I first seek you and your strength. [Jesus said,] "By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me."—John 5:30Thoughts on Today's Verse..."So who you tryin' to please, anyway?" These words from my dad still ring in my ears. His point? There are only two voices we MUST please:
Our Father in heaven, because all praise and honor are due him, because we want to know that we've done our best and been the best we could be for God the years, however, I've learned that I can't begin to honor the second voice very well without seeking the first will of the Father, the heart and character behind the first voice. Don't you hope that someday you reach the place where you can join Jesus in saying with absolute assurance: "I seek not to please myself but him who sent me!" The closer we approach that reality, the more we realize that we can't do anything of eternal significance on our own. Only when we live to honor God do we achieve the significance and have the impact that our lives were made to have.My Prayer and Righteous Father, I know that without you, I can do nothing of lasting significance that is good. I have tried my way and failed. I have sought my good and seen my success short-lived. I want to live now, today, and the rest of my life to please you. Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD.—Leviticus 19:32Thoughts on Today's Verse...In an age where respect is little known and even less practiced, showing honor for those who are older is often overlooked. Yet in this scripture, by the LORD's own word, showing respect for the elderly ranks right up there with reverencing God. But then we shouldn't be surprised since God made honoring parents the very first commandment directed at our relationship with others (Exodus 20:12-17). (The first four commandments were directed at our relationship with him — Exodus 20:1-11). Let's be distinctive in contrast to most of the world: let's honor, respect, and care for those who are older among us!My Prayer and Eternal God, thank you for my parents in the flesh and in the faith. Please give those who have been my spiritual mentors a special blessing. Without their guidance, I'm not sure how I would have matured and become useful to your Kingdom. Please help me as I grow older. I want to mature in my faith and gain the character that will be needed by those you have placed before me to influence. May we, your people, both young and old alike, restore dignity and respect to our relationships before you in our generation. In Jesus' name, I ask this.
