Discontinued II. The Caracas Swimsuit, named after my native city, was the first piece I designed for Gil when I was 25, and one of 5 pieces we launched with in 2018. It got a lot of attention (and spawned many imitators), but it was never our easiest or most “wearable” style. I’ll admit that no matter how much I perfected the fit, it still rides up my bum a bit when I walk, and I’m not cut out for the level of bush maintenance required to wear this in public without causing a fuss. We made a bunch of great colorways over the years but the original black and white is simply perfect. We discontinued it two years ago, and while I get a little self-conscious in it now (it’s so high cut it flashes the trashy tattoo I got at 14), I’ll never get rid of it. Perhaps I’ll relaunch it for our 10 year anniversary (god willing!)

Discontinued is a series about things I love that we don’t make anymore.

I love my unrenovated 1970’s kitchen. I don’t own a blender or fancy cookware. I recently bought an electric kettle.

Discontinued I. I remember when our SSENSE buyer told me that bodysuits and unitards were on their way out. They may have been right (the sales said so to be fair), but I resisted cutting the Via Olympia Unitard for a while, mostly for selfish reasons. It will never not be my favorite thing to work out in, whether it’s hiking, yoga or lifting weights. It’s cotton and never loose or constrictive regardless of how my body expands or contracts, and it washes and ages so well. Plus it’s only one piece so it’s one less decision. It’s named after my grandma’s neighborhood in Barcelona. We discontinued it last year (or was it the year before?) and I kept one in every color but I regret not keeping more.

Discontinued is a little series about things I love that we don’t make anymore.

I often felt like a tourist of the night, or, occasionally, like an escaped fugitive. In glimpses of freedom, I’d sometimes felt guilt. How selfish of me to lose track of time, to feel the wind in my hair to no one else’s benefit. How unproductive was that quiet thirty minutes alone in the car before going inside.

Found film photos from the weeks leading up to the launch of Gil Rodriguez in 2018. It was summer and I was always driving — from the factory downtown to Hollywood, from the dye house to Koreatown, picking up samples and shooting them on beautiful friends in their houses. Friends photographed other friends. Johnny, the dye house owner with the apricot shirt and the best smile, who passed away from Covid in 2020, had figured out how to dye the cotton spandex we’d knit in big panels because I couldn’t afford full rolls.

Happy 8 years to Gil Rodriguez.
