🐾 DID YOU KNOW? — READ THE LABEL, NOT JUST THE FRONT OF THE CAN! 👀
That can of dog food that says “Beef Dinner,” “Lamb Recipe” or “Beef Flavor” on the front?
You might want to flip it over and read the ingredient list. 🧐
Depending on exactly how the product is named, beef or lamb doesn't necessarily have to be the first ingredient.
In fact, pet food labeling rules have some pretty surprising distinctions:
🥩 “Beef Dinner,” “Beef Entrée” or “Beef Recipe” — the named ingredient generally only needs to meet the 25% rule (excluding water used for processing).
🥩 “Dog Food WITH Beef” — beef may make up just 3% of the product.
🥩 “Beef Flavor” — beef doesn't have to be the main ingredient at all. There simply needs to be an ingredient that provides that flavor.
Meanwhile, the ingredient list tells a different part of the story — ingredients are listed from greatest to least by weight.
So here's our challenge to every dog parent:
👇 Turn the package around. Read the ingredients.
Don't assume the biggest words on the front of the package tell you what's making up most of what's inside.
You might be VERY surprised by what you find. 👀🐶
