In a spot where you can't reach a professional? Here’s how to fix a few common problems you may encounter with your RV:

• Changing the Battery: Choose the best battery for your RV, disconnect all components from their power source and use the battery disconnect switch. Remove the negative lead first to avoid being shocked.

• Replacing Lights: Know your vehicle and the type of lights it requires; for example, low-voltage lights can't go in AC powered fixtures. Turn the power off and replace the bulb.

• Waste Water Leaks: Purchase a waste valve replacement kit. Drain the water, flush, remove the old drain valve, and then follow installation instructions on your kit.

• Tire Blowout: Maybe one of the more common issues faced with RV life. Maintaining and checking tire pressures preventatively can be the key to avoiding this. The cost to repair a blowout is generally low in the $100 - $200 range. You can typically replace an RV tire inexpensively; however, if the blowout causes other damage the cost can go up significantly.

• Leaky Roof: If you notice any cracks or holes in the sealant, they should be repaired immediately. If left alone, these issues will lead to water intrusion. Simply get a tube of self-leveling sealant for the flat seals and thoroughly cover the area.

• No AC: There are a few checks for this. Check the AC breaker on the RV and also the breaker at the shore power panel, as they occasionally trip. If that is fine, check the thermostat. A new thermostat can easily be replaced for a relatively low cost. If your whole unit is broken, professional help is likely needed.
