🎯 701 PRECISION MINUTE

YOUR RETICLE CAN BE ON TARGET — AND YOU CAN STILL MISS YOUR POINT OF AIM.

That’s where parallax comes in.

On a scope with adjustable parallax, getting the target image sharp is only part of the job.

Here’s a quick way to check it:

Set the r***e solidly on target and, without moving the r***e, slightly move your head side to side or up and down behind the scope.

👁️ Watch the reticle against the target.

If the reticle appears to move across the target as your eye position changes, you still have parallax error.

Adjust the parallax until that apparent movement is minimized.

Why does it matter?

If your eye isn’t perfectly centered behind the optic, remaining parallax can introduce aiming error — and the farther you’re shooting, the more important consistency becomes.

Don’t just adjust until the target looks clear.

MOVE YOUR HEAD. WATCH THE RETICLE. VERIFY IT.

It takes a few seconds and gives you one less variable to wonder about when the shot matters.

🔧 TECH TIP THURSDAY

DON’T TRUST YOUR TURRET JUST BECAUSE IT CLICKS.

Your r***e is zeroed.

Your ballistic calculator says to dial 12.5 MOA.

You dial 12.5 MOA.

But did your scope actually move 12.5 MOA?

That’s something a lot of hunters never verify.

🎯 A tracking test helps determine whether the adjustment you dial on the turret matches the actual movement of the reticle.

With a properly measured vertical reference at a known distance, you can check:

• Does the scope move the amount you actually dialed?
• Are the adjustments consistent throughout the turret’s travel?
• When you dial back down, does it return to the original zero?

For example, at 100 yards, 10 MOA should move the point of aim approximately 10.47 inches.

If it doesn’t, you may have a tracking error.

A small discrepancy might not seem important at shorter hunting distances. But the farther you dial, the more that error can matter.

So before blaming your am******on, ballistic calculator or r***e when your impacts don’t match your data…

Verify that your scope is actually doing what the turret says it is doing.

Your ballistic data is only useful if the optic accurately applies it.

YOUR BALLISTIC CALCULATOR CAN DO THE MATH PERFECTLY — AND STILL GIVE YOU THE WRONG ANSWER.

Why?

Because it only knows what you tell it.

Wrong velocity.
Wrong zero.
Wrong sight height.
Wrong BC or drag model.
Wrong atmospheric data.
Wrong range.

Even a scope that isn’t tracking correctly can make a good ballistic solution look bad.

At 200 yards, a small error might barely get your attention.

Stretch the distance and those same errors start showing up on target.

A ½-MOA GUARANTEE SOUNDS IMPRESSIVE. BUT WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY GUARANTEE?

Accuracy guarantees matter. They can tell you a lot about the mechanical precision a r***e is capable of producing under defined conditions.

But they don’t tell the whole story.

A ½-MOA guarantee doesn’t automatically tell you:

🎯 How well you will shoot the r***e
💥 How manageable the recoil will be
⚖️ How it will balance from field positions
📦 Which am******on it will perform best with
🌬️ Whether your ballistic data and wind call are correct
🥶 Where that first cold-bore shot will land

And a r***e capable of ½ MOA from a controlled rest isn’t automatically a better hunting r***e than one you can consistently shoot better in the field.

COLD BORE… OR COLD SHOOTER?

Your first shot lands slightly outside the next four.

It’s easy to immediately blame the r***e:

“That’s my cold-bore shift.”

But is it?

Sometimes the r***e does produce a repeatable first-round shift. But sometimes the first shot is simply the shooter settling into the r***e.

Think about what can change after that first round:

• Your position settles
• Shoulder pressure becomes more consistent
• Your grip relaxes
• Recoil management improves
• You become more comfortable behind the r***e

Before calling that first impact a “cold-bore shift,” prove that it’s repeatable.

Start multiple range sessions with a genuinely cold r***e and record that first impact.

If it consistently moves in the same direction by a similar amount, you’ve learned something about your system.

If it moves around?

The r***e might not be the variable.

🎯 Don’t explain away the first shot. Track it.

For a hunting r***e, that first round deserves your attention — because it may be the only one that matters.

BALANCE MATTERS MORE THAN THE SCALE.

Two r***es can weigh exactly the same and feel completely different once you get behind them.

Why?

Weight distribution.

A r***e that carries more weight toward the muzzle may feel steadier when you settle into a shooting position.

A r***e that carries more weight toward the rear may feel quicker and easier to maneuver.

Then add:

• A suppressor
• A heavier optic
• A bipod
• Different barrel contours

…and the balance changes again.

That’s why we don’t think r***e weight should be judged by the number on the scale alone.

Shoulder it. Build a position. See how it settles.

The best setup is the one that balances well for how you actually hunt and shoot.

LIGHTWEIGHT RI**ES: WHEN DOES LIGHT BECOME TOO LIGHT?

Everybody wants a lighter hunting r***e.

Until they have to shoot it.

A lightweight r***e is easier to carry through steep country, easier to maneuver, and a lot more enjoyable after miles on your feet.

But every pound you remove changes something.

Less weight can mean:

• More felt recoil
• Less stability from unsupported positions
• Greater sensitivity to shooter input
• A r***e that’s harder to settle behind
• Less forgiveness when fundamentals aren’t perfect

That doesn’t mean lightweight r***es are bad.

It means lighter isn’t automatically better.

The best hunting r***e isn’t necessarily the lightest r***e you can carry.

It’s the lightest r***e you can still shoot consistently and confidently when the opportunity matters.

That balance will be different for every hunter.

YOUR R***E DOESN’T KNOW WHAT DISTANCE YOU’RE SHOOTING.

If your r***e consistently shoots ½ MOA at 100 yards, that doesn’t mean it suddenly becomes inaccurate when you stretch it out.

½ MOA is roughly:

½ inch at 100 yards
1 inch at 200 yards
1½ inches at 300 yards
2 inches at 400 yards

The angular precision of the r***e hasn’t necessarily changed.

What changes is everything we add to the equation.

Wind becomes more important.
Velocity variation matters more.
Range errors matter more.
Your shooting position matters more.
Small mistakes become easier to see.

That’s why a r***e that stacks bullets at 100 yards can seem like a completely different r***e at 500.

Sometimes it isn’t the r***e opening up.

Distance is simply exposing weaknesses that were already there.

🎯 The farther you shoot, the less room there is for assumptions.
