Good Morning, All! I wanted to draw your attention to a wonderful event happening today in Valencia, PA. Wildbird Recovery in Stormy Oaks Conservancy is hosting their 15th Annual Fall Migration Festival where the community is invited to learn about wild birds and how to protect them as well as meet the longtime residents like 18-year-old Kele (pictured here).

As one of their ambassador birds, Kele has been at Wildbird Recovery for 18 years. He was a week old when he fell out of his nest and permanently damaged his wing, lungs and beak, making it impossible for him to return to the wild. He, along with a small cadre of other ambassador birds are active in educating the community about the life and needs of such birds. In addition to caring for injured birds, they work toward releasing birds of prey and song birds to their natural habitat as well as caring for horses and honey bees and more.

This event is rich with educational and interactive activities while also being an important fundraiser for the nonprofit. At Novel Breads Co., we honored to get a tour of the lovely grounds and meet the lovely birds who call the place home. It was our pleasure to meet the family who has made it their lifelong vocation to care for nature and to help others learn how they can do the same. We were happy to donate a big basket toward today’s raffle.

Our upcoming vacation inspired the menu this week. Novel Breads Co. will be closed September 20-October 2 to enjoy a little R&R and also prepare for the Mars Applefest. This week, though, you can still find us in Mars, Grove City and Beaver with loaves of Ethiopian Milk & Honey Bread, New Orleans Bread (also known as Muffaletta), Pizza Babka, Classic Sourdough, Rowdy Rye, French Toast Bread and assortment of other loaves at each location. English Muffins and Butterscotch Pecan Muffins will also be available. Come find us this week and stock up on your favorites.

We wanted to draw everyone’s attention to our local Mars business, Pfeifer Hardware, which has been an important fixture in Mars for an astonishing 40 years. They will be celebrating today with Customer Appreciation Day. Stop in today and congratulate Ed and Stacie for their accomplishments and thank them for being such active contributors to the community!

UPDATE: Due to the prediction of 2" of rain on 09/10/26 we have rescheduled our customer appreciation gathering for Friday 09/11/26 it is still 11:00AM-2:00PM and we really hope to see you there. We never wanted to do it on that day out of extreme reverence for the victims of 9/11 and the somber nature of the day. But it is our country's perseverance that allows us to enjoy every day so we will be celebrating that perseverance as well. So please join us. Our flags will, as always, be flying high and the skies will be blue and we will be celebrating dear customer...so, see you there.

Treat yourself for your labors this holiday weekend and pickup some creamy Whipped Mascarpone Spread to go with your bread! It’s especially good on Ginger Oat and Toasted Brownie Breads as well as English Muffins (all of which are available). Find the Mascarpone today at the store until 2pm or tomorrow at the Beaver Farmers Market, 10-1. ❤️🤍💙

Feelin’ a bit nutty this week…as least when it comes to bread. At the store, Grove City and Beaver there will be loaves of Toasted Pecan Brownie Bread, Peanut Butter Cornbread and Buckeye Babka (chocolate peanut butter), all of which are divine slathered with homemade Whipped Mascarpone Spread. The Ginger Oat also tangoes deliciously with the mascarpone and will be available this week. On the savory side, you’ll find Classic Italian, Whole Grain Sourdough, Mushroom & Chives Bread, Gentleman’s Black Bread, Focaccia, Roasted Garlic Sourdough Breadsticks and more! Yummy yummy!

Happy September, Everyone! Did you know that this month is known as Sourdough September around the world? Real Sourdough is bread made with just wild yeast/sourdough starter without any other additives or leavening agents (active dry yeast, baking soda, baking powder, etc). Bakers, both professional and homespun, celebrate the craft of sourdough by baking delicious breads. At Novel Breads, we are honoring Real Sourdough by making our starter available for purchase during the month of September. Pearl (the Novel Breads’ starter) will come in the form of dried flakes that can be reconstituted and instructions to building your starter. We will have some available at each location and you can preorder online at www.novelbreads.com. Furthermore, I am at the store most Fridays and offer the service of “ask the baker” any questions related to building your healthy starter or issues you may have with your creations. Celebrate Sourdough September by trying your hand at sourdough bread or at least enjoying a delicious loaf from us!

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to visit one of our fellow Book Crawl Bookstores after selling out early at the Beaver Farmers Market. We visited Moden Mercantile ( Moden Mercantile ) in New Brighton! We loved this fun, inventive store with interesting books and plants and other playful items. Definitely recommend them as a must see destination in town! We were also inspired by their tribute to Dolly Parton. In honor of her, they are giving children’s books away free to any child who stops in their store today. What awed us and them was how many people stopped in yesterday to donate children’s books to the cause (Check out the last image to see the stacks and stacks of donated books). We are happy to be part of a network of caring and creative booksellers like the owners of Moden Mercantile. They are open today 10-2 .
