Tuesday morning fit check 😙✌

Yes, I am wearing a hoodie in August. Not because it's cold.....

It's because of the damn mosquitoes 🦟!!!

They are sooooo bad right now that I need to wear a thick hoodie, tied tight around my face and a bug repellent clip on on the brim of my hat.

But at least the dahlias look amazing right now.

Meet the ugly flowers that will be tossed in the compost this week.

Normally you see the beautiful bouquets on the stand but today you will learn the truth.

For every flower that makes it in to your bouquet, there are at least 5 other flowers that literally didn't make the cut and will need to be removed and disposed of.

Bug damage is common this time of year but this week it's water damage.

Yup you read that right. Too much rain from above can damage petals making blooms unsellable. Constant moisture plus humidity and warmth = fungal growth.

It takes the same amount of time, input costs, and labor to grow a damaged flower as it does a perfect flower. So it hurts having to cull blooms especially this week when that number will climb significantly higher than normal.

But I know things could have been a lot worse and over all we got lucky.

What is it like flower farming in August here at Jen's Flower Garden?

Well...let me tell you.

It's humid as all get out but you have to wear a hoodie or you will be eaten alive by mosquitoes.

You look at the forecast to determine what outside work will get done and if you would prefer to do said outside work in either extreme humidity, torrential down pour or a tornado warning.

Try to harvest as fast as possible to beat said tornado warning.

Finish in the nick of time just to then have to drive through the same tornado warning to pick up your teen from football practice.

And this was just today before noon🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

August is not for the weak.

Remember those red and orange dahlias from yesterday's post?

Well, they found some different friends to hang out with instead of each other.

The red dahlias got paired with those purple Lisianthus which have been super popular this summer.

And the orange dahlias got paired with the pink Lisianthus.

I love this color combo but I am just not ready for this dahlia color combination at the moment, maybe in September 🍂 💁🏼‍♀️

But you will find the orange dahlias paired with pinks and the red dahlias paired with purples on the flowerstand this evening and tomorrow.

I had brilliant idea for today's content....

I was going to take you on a vlog journey of a day in the life of a flower farmer.

But when I woke up at 6am to take my son to football I reevaluated my brilliant idea.

I ended up spending 75% of my day in the car today and absolutely 0% in the garden. (Flower Subscriptions got delivered, and that's the only flower thing I did today😬).

Not really that entertaining, huh.

Maybe I'll save that idea for another day.

A task that I dread every August....

Manually entering my kids' bazillion activities in to my calendar because paper calendars and pdf calendars are still being used. Can we just use an app that will import everything to Google Calendar please ? 🥺

Or can Chatgpt help me with this? 🤔🤔🤔

Anyway, I will be unavailable from 330pm to 9pm Monday-Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturdays until Halloween 🎃 free lancing as an unpaid Uber driver for my teens and almost tween. 🤷🏼‍♀️

We are at the point where Summer is moving at breakneck speed and I have no idea what to make for dinner anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️
