Before and after pictures of the process of a low impact land clearing project. We are removing privet, honeysuckle, poison ivy and blackberry bushes by hand and only using herbicide in a direct application to stubborn privet and poison ivy stumps.

Why are native plants, grasses and trees are so important? Non native plants do attract some pollinators, but the plants in our gardens need to do more than just attract pollinators. They need to be able to support them through all life stages to increase biodiversity.

The vast majority (roughly 90 percent) of plant-feeding insects are specialists, adapted to digest only a limited suite of plant chemistries, often corresponding to a particular plant family or genus.

Non natives will not support these specialist species.

The very best way to support pollinators is by planting species of trees, flowers, shrubs and grasses that are native to our geographical region.

It’s time to prepare flower beds for fall planting! This client is getting a new native garden bed but before the fun, we prepped the bed by edging a new line, adding fresh topsoil, pea gravel along the foundation and a thin layer of mulch to hold the soil in place. Pictures are before we started and what it looks like, now prepped.

In September, it will be planted with native Phlox, Bee Balm, Coneflower, Penstemon, Aster, Autumn Sage, Muhly Grass, Little Blue Stem that will give them color throughout most of the year! Stay tuned!
