I must say that living and working in Fat City was a BLAST. Some of the best times of my life was a 4 or 5 years spent working as a bartender for two or three clubs located in the Fat City area.
In 1972 my move to The New Orleans area from Houston started a part of my life which is until this day is still a little muddled. It was a whirl-wind, mind boggling era. It was while working for Roy Anselmo that I met and married my future wife, Liz. We were (years later) blessed with a wonderful daughter, Trinity. Both she and myself were associated with the bar and club business. Both of us were “night people” so-to-speak. We worked from 8pm till 4am six nights per week and usually slept until mid day and started to ready ourselves for another night of work in Fat City. The pay was great and the good times just kept rolling along.
It was while working for Roy and Paul at Sancho Panza when Roy decided to build 4 more clubs around the corner from Sancho Panza. He (Roy) promoted me to manage two of the clubs. Vito and Danny had the other two. After about a year my yearning for more money led me back to tending bar at The Godfather. I worked there until I showed up for work one day and the club lay in ashes. At this point Liz and I strayed away from the club and bar business and got “straight jobs”.
I will always remember those times as one of the highlights of my life. Some of those years sort of run foggily together but that’s ok. I still smile and remember to yell “throw me something mister”.
