Okay so imagine: you walk up under the awning, past the chalk drawings covering the sidewalk & the “Coffee and Kindness” painted on the window. Walking in I heard Reptilla by The Strokes, smelt a combination of spices, & saw a foosball table in the back.👂🏼

We’ve followed eachother on socials, but last Monday I got to finally meet Lee Carter (owner) in person. He’s been a barista for a long time & was one of the founders of Five Watt back in 2014. He has spent his career building affordable shops & helped push Twin Cities shops to treat drinks like cocktails. Take Care is the next chapter🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

It was really cool to see the “How do you Take Care?” wall. It’s covered in hundreds of sticky notes from customers, & right below it is a TV/VCR combo hooked up to a SNES & GameCube with Super Mario World running. The shelves have everything from Zelda games, manga, & vinyl to a Monopoly box-it felt like we were hanging out in a friend’s living room.🪴

This location has some history too. Kopplin’s was a family-run gathering space in Merriam Park, & Andrew Kopplin was one of the first to bring 3rd wave coffee culture to the Twin Cities. It’s pretty sweet to see another community-first shop in the same room.🏡

Words of Wisdom from Lee: “Find your creative purpose & find a way to bring that to the work that you do.”🧠

 🤔FINAL THOUGHTS💭
They’re still building right now, but it’s nice to see how the bones have been laid out. They have good coffee, chill staff, & are open-minded to feedback/ideas-I’m excited to see this smash tournament come to life! It’s a cozy space & just a short walk from a few local campuses, check them out :)

Today’s Drinks: Lavender Orange Paradise, Spiced Apple, Cinnamon Spice Miel, Banana Pancakes🍊🍎🍯🥞

**Hey fam, some of you asked to share photos from the stories so I’m going to start mixing the media from my phone & camera too to add more of a blended experience-please keep giving me feedback!** :)

•Grand Opening was July 20th
•A radish was the first vegetables that Lily grew

OKAY so we had a total of 4 visits to Radish, seeing pals we’ve met in the community, baristas we’ve run into from previous shops, & in our most recent visit spoke with Lily (Founder) of the space.👋🏼

You Look Like You Love Me by Ella Green playing, natural sunlight flowing through the windows, and something just north of 80 local producers’ products living on the shelves. This spot is unique for sure. Shots were being pulled with Backstory roasted beans & paired with pastries from Vikings & Goddesses.👀👂🏼

Lily has always been passionate about the local scene. Before jumping into Radish, she spent a few years being in charge at Seward Co-op on Franklin. She wanted to make a strong impact for the local scene and emphasized that where you decide to eat & the brands you support play such a big role in moving the needle for them. With her model she is able to give back two to three times back to the producers.👊🏼

She believes that putting your time, energy, & money towards something can really go a long way. Losing farms means losing food- she wants to give back to provide a more sustainable future so we can keep these same farms around & so we can keep more little joys like our heirloom tomatoes in 10 years from now.🍅

Nugget of Knowledge from Lily: “The harder you work the luckier you get”🧠

📰THE SCOOP & FINAL THOUGHTS💭
We had 3 parts this lol. I ran into Alex outside of the building while he was on a walk with his daughter-for those following on the stories, he was 100% the guy we saw win the latte art contest at Misfit a few winters ago.🏆

Okay so Port2050 opened on May 8th, but Alex started journey back in Columbia in 2015 before Venezuela, Dubai, and now MN. He learned firsthand from a pal who used to come to a bar he served at. Fast forward a few years he’s in courses, labs, & Head of Quality in Roots Cafe over in UAE.🌎

Alex was also a part of Sweet Ren Academy over at Dogwood where they taught everything from roasting to business law.🎓

Port2050 is for sure a destination shop that is coffee forward. The experience I had consisted of Zach & Alex walking me through each of the coffee’s origins, giving credit to the farmers and produces, & gave me a crash course the differences between washed, honey, & natural processes (they even had a bean for a visual).🧑🏻‍🏫

Go for their pourovers, which mind you they are $10 which seems INSANE, but when you breakdown the cost per bag you’re getting a solid deal for their limited & premium selection👌🏼

*I’ve been doing my best to listen to you on the stories, for those who are more mindful with spending, go with the testing kit, it’s 2 for $15*🧠

Fun Fact: Port2050 comes from Alex’s hometown, Puerto Cabello, Venezuela- “Port” is for the coastal city and the 2050 is actually the zipcode! Their logo is inspired by the monument along El Malecon!🇻🇪

He’s spent countless years gaining a strong well-rounded experiences, selling out at markets, and opened 2050 with $500 back in July, gotta respect the grind. Go support them👍🏼

OKAY so imagine this: A bright, warm & cozy space with huge windows bringing in tons of natural sunlight. There’s a long booth along the windows, plenty of tables & lounge chairs, plants throughout & warm wood tones contrasting with the white brick and black accents.☀️🌿

I had the pleasure of speaking with Sam, Unwind’s owner. He’s from Guangdong, China, he moved to Seattle before attending the U of M for finance & later earned his Master’s in Marketing in Virginia. He’s a coffee lover, Sam saved up to make Unwind happen & took the leap into opening his first shop.☕️

For my coffee nerds out here, they’re currently serving coffee roasted by SEY in Brooklyn, with beans from Peru & Ecuador. They also offer off-menu pour overs. He is constantly exploring coffee too—they recently sampled Onyx coffees, including a Gesha.🧐

Fun Fact: The bird in Unwind’s branding represents being able to land, hang out & preen for awhile—the same feeling Sam wants people to have here. No pressure to move on, just… Unwind.🐦

Words of Wisdom from Sam: Spend a lot of time thinking & prepping before making a decision-things can go wrong expect the worst & hope for the best!🧠

“Yeah it can be stressful, but it’s about the interactions everyday, it’s a part of people’s lives, that’s why we do it.”

🤔FINAL THOUGHTS💭
Okay so this was a 2 part visit. Sunday was PACKED & he was training a staff member so we came back for chat on the Tuesday. I liked his story a lot, he is a guy that loves coffee & went all in on something he cares about. With no prior experience he put in a little extra in their time, equipment, & staff, really understanding the risk it of it all. The space is a cozy one to work at, coffee was solid, & the conversation was great. Go support them!👍🏼

2 weeks ago we hosted our first ever coffee rave w/ Ninth Street !⚽️

We love coffee & EDM and are doing our best to support both local scenes.🙌🏼

We’re still new to this, but we’re doing our best to make sure everyone has a good time whether it’s their first show or their 100th.🎉

Thank you so much to everyone who showed up that day. It means the absolute world to us. You remind us that there are people out there who have our back while we spend countless hours behind the scenes making these things happen. On the tough days, you’re the ones who keep us going.

I love you all so so much. Thank you for being there. Cheers to good memories & many more to come.☕️🍻
