Prayers in times of grief. Just pray when you are grieving. Grief can make it difficult to know what to say. You don't need perfect words or a long prayer. You can come exactly as you are - sad, angry, confused, numb, grateful, or even unable to speak.
If prayer is part of your faith, here are some things you can pray for and ask God for while grieving.
1. Ask for comfort.
""God, my heart is hurting. Please comfort me when the sadness feels overwelming. Help me feel that I am not alone.""
2. Ask for strength today.
""Lord, give me the strength to get through today. Help me take this one day, one hour, and one moment at a time.""
3. Ask for peace.
""Please give me peace in the moments when my mind is racing and my heart is hurting. Quiet the fear, anxiety, and questions inside me.""
4. Ask for help accepting what happened.
""Help me accept what I cannot change. Give me grace to grieve without feeling that I have to be okay before I am ready.""
5. Ask for help with the memories.
""Thank You for the time I had with my loved one. Help me hold onto the beautiful memories while learning how to live with their absence.""
6. Ask for guidance about the future.
""Lord, I don't know how life is supposed to look now. Guide me through this new season. Show me what I need to do next.""
7. Ask for strength when you miss them.
""When I reach for them and remember they aren't here, please hold me through that moment. Help me carry the love I have for them.""
8. Ask for support from others.
""Put caring people around me. Give me courage to ask for help when I need it and wisdom to recognize those who genuinely want to support me.""
9. Give God your anger and questions.
""God, I don't understand why this happened. I'm angry. I'm hurt. I have questions. I don't know what to do with these feelings, so I'm giving them to You.""
You don't have to hide difficult emotions from God. When you don't know what to pray, sometimes the most honest prayer is simply ""God, help me"" or ""God, I'm hurting. Please stay with me"" or even ""God, I don't have any words today. Please understand my heart."" That is enough.
If you're having a partifularly difficult moment, you can use a simple breathing prayer.
Breathe in ""God, be with me.""
Breathe out ""I give You my pain.""
Repeat it slowly for a few minutes.
Grief doesn't mean you're losing your faith. Grief is often the price we pay for having deeply loved someone. You don't have to get over your loved one - you gradually learn how to carry the love and the loss together.
