Coolest guitar that has been on my bench in a while...

A new customer walked through my door with this beauty in a case...I have never seen one of these Gary Kramer Kramertorium guitars in person.

These are really rare. This one is literally mint - apparently it was in a recording studio in Phoenix and the studio owner bought it new and never took it out of the case and never used it. It literally has the original strings on it.

I will be doing a setup and he wants me to look at the EMG pickups - he says they don't sound right, even with a new battery.
This one will be fun...

Acoustic bridge repair

A college student brought in her Luna acoustic with the bridge lifted almost completely off - only a little edge was still holding on. She goes back and forth between Texas and California in college and it sits in her hot car for long periods of time. Time and climate finally got to the glue holding the bridge on.

Prepped the surface of the bridge and the bridge plate on the guitar and got out my bridge jig. A little Titebond will fix this up - just letting it dry for a good day.

A good lesson in keeping your guitar as climate and humidity controlled as possible!

Another bass on the bench...

My favorite drummer customer (who clearly has a bass addiction 😂) brought me a new Fender Mustang short scale bass for a setup and the installation of a thumb rest (already completed as you can see in the pic). I love these basses - the mix of the P-Bass and Jazz Bass electronics just gives it a distinct sound along with the short scale. On to the setup!

Refret with Jescar Stainless Steel

Doing a refret on an older Fender. The customer was tired of the old low/narrow frets, so he decided to go with Jescar stainless steel 58118 - extra jumbo, baby! He plays heavier music, so I think he is going to love these frets. The old ones didn't want to come out - they had been in there a while and even though I used solder and a soldering iron to get them heated up, there was a couple of places where it chipped out. A little rosewood dust and some thin CA glue did the trick on those spots.

Looking forward to getting this fret wire installed and seeing the customer's face when he tries it out the first time!

Bass on the bench this past week...

On a fairly regular basis, I get a customer that brings in a bass. This is the first MEDIUM scale bass (32" scale length) I have worked on. This Spector Bantam 5 is a beautiful bass and a really cool design. As you can see, the body is nice and small and it has EMG active electronics. It sounds killer and it is VERY well constructed. That 0.125" B string could double as a high-tension power cable!

Did a full setup on this one, and found the neck to have a noticeable backbow. This is unusual for a bass since it generally has a lot of tension on the neck pulling it forward. Somebody overcompensated a bit on the dropping the relief in the neck in the past. Got it all sorted out and nice low action on those thick strings for easy playability.

12-strings are a lot of work...but I love the result...

This is one Is a Mitchell MD-212 from the late 1980s/early 1990s. Overall it is in very good shape outside of needing a lot of lubrication/tightening in the tuners, a new set of bridge pins, and a serious fretboard cleaning/conditioning and fret polish. I don't think the fretboard or frets have been touched since it was purchased.

It plays nice and has a great full, rich sound. The customer should be pleased with the result!
