Originally designed to pay homage to the early cartographers, these high-quality and exceptionally detailed custom maps are rendered by Chris Robitaille (Xplorer Maps artist and co-founder) using an antique, old-wo

rld style. Our fine-art illustrations have been approved by National Park Service specialists and their respective non-profit partners on the basis of educational merit, interpretive value, cultural relevance, and historical and geographic accuracy.

Blue skies over Missoula today feel extra special. 💙🏔️

After many, many, many hot and smoky days, we’re feeling especially grateful to see Montana looking like this again.

It’s days like today that remind us why we create hand drawn story maps… to celebrate the places we love and create lasting, meaningful connections between people and place. ⭐️

Look beyond the iconic red cliffs and you’ll find the Grand Canyon Supergroup… ancient layers of mostly sedimentary and volcanic rock deposited between 1.255 billion and 729 million years ago.

These rocks tell a remarkable story of ancient rivers, shallow seas and the rise and breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia. Then, about 725 million years ago, the layers were lifted and tilted. Later erosion carved away much of them, leaving the dramatic remnants we can still see today.

Even more incredible? The younger Paleozoic layers above them are mostly horizontal, creating the famous Great Angular Unconformity (a visual record of enormous amounts of geological time).

It’s a reminder that when you explore the Grand Canyon, you’re not just looking at a landscape — you’re looking deep into Earth’s history.

Becca is the daughter of our very own Chris Robitaille, the artist behind our hand drawn story maps, and an incredible storyteller in her own right.

Her Costa Rica film, Xploring Pacuare, premiered at Missoula’s Roxy Theater in 2023. The film beautifully captures conservation, adventure and wild places worth protecting.
