Today, we’re highlighting one of the hardest working members of the A Cut Above crew—Rhett Michael - is our Quality Coordinator.🪚.

He never misses a day. He is always in the thick of things. Managing and double checking all cuts.

He is adamant about skipping his naps, just to ensure your project is completed on time!

You’ll never find him without his flashlight, safety goggles or cranberry juice.

You may not always see him during final deliveries, but Rhett is a major part of what happens behind the scenes before your forever piece arrives.

We’re a family business in every sense of the word—and we wouldn’t have it any other way. ❤️

“What color stain do you use?”

IF WE DO- Natural. Every. Single. Time.

In fact, we have never once used a colored stain on any of our hardwood products.

Why?

Because… what’s the point?

If you ask us to stain your project a different color?

We will 100% of the time say, “No” and we will sleep just fine with the fan on, losing your project.

If you want dark wood, we’ll go to Stella Sawmill and find you beautiful dark hardwood.

If you want lighter tones, we’ll go back to Stella Sawmill and choose a species that naturally gives you that look.

But taking a gorgeous piece of hardwood and covering its natural character with colored stain?

Not our style.

The tree already did the hard part.

Our job is to make sure you can see it.

We will never change our standard.

Behind every woodworker is probably a tired woman who puts up with all of our bu****it. 😂

The loud noises.
The sawdust that somehow follows us everywhere.
The frustration.
The swear words coming from the shop.
The “I’ll be done in 20 minutes” that actually means two more hours.
And the complete lack of attention because there’s one tiny detail on a project that we can’t stop obsessing over.

In my case, that woman is Michelle.

My best friend. The best mom. My biggest supporter. And the person who has believed in me—and in A Cut Above Custom Woodwork—from the very beginning.

She’s been there through the ideas that worked and the ones that absolutely didn’t. The long nights, the stressful deadlines, the expensive mistakes, the giant projects I probably had no business saying yes to, and every crazy idea that started with, “Okay, hear me out…”

She’s celebrated the wins with me and reminded me why I started when things weren’t going the way I wanted.

What people see is the finished table. The epoxy pour. The new project. The business growing.

What they don’t always see is the person behind the scenes who makes it possible for me to keep chasing all of it.

You know it’s going to be a good day when the Flowyline delivery shows up! 👀🔥

We’ve been using Flowyline Design bases for about 4 years now, and there’s a reason we keep coming back.

From the quality of their products to the customer service, Alex and his team have always taken great care of us. When you’re building one-of-a-kind furniture, the base underneath it needs to live up to the same standard—and these guys deliver.

Yes, even I need a little help from time to time. Who woulda guessed…..

Yesterday, I teamed up with fellow woodworker Andruw Simmermaker of Simmie Builds, all the way out of Kilbourne, Illinois. 🪵

Because sometimes, two creative minds are better than one.

The challenge?

🧩 Take a 36” long slab and stretch it into a 70” long one-of-a-kind piece of furniture! 🪚
