Have a plan for:

• Different winds and thermals
• Morning and evening hunts
• Low-pressure backup spots
• High-risk, high-reward locations

Every setup should have a clean entry, clean exit, and the right timing.

For me, the answer is easy.

Family. Every single time.

Because one day, your son won't be four years old asking you to color with him.

These seasons don't last forever.

As hunters and as men, we all have responsibilities.

And sometimes the greatest legacy we leave isn't hanging on the wall—it's sitting around the dinner table.

The difference between consistent hunters and everyone else?

Discipline.

Don't hunt a spot just because you have the day off.

Before every hunt, ask yourself:

• Does the wind match?
• Is my access clean?
• Are deer likely to move in daylight?

If the answer is no, don't force it.

Protect your best spots, trust your plan, and stay consistent.

Now, with young kids, I've learned to value quality over quantity.

And honestly?

The best hunt of my life wasn't a giant buck.

It was harvesting a doe with my child sitting beside me.

• Where deer are bedding
• Where they're feeding
• How they're traveling
• Which winds and thermals work for each setup
• How you'll access every stand

You don't need more hunting spots.

You need a better plan for the ones you already have.

When the season opens, don't guess.

Too many hunters compare themselves to someone with 20 years of experience.

Don't.

Every hunter starts at the same place.

Level one is simple: get in the woods and gain experience.

Harvest deer.

Hunt squirrels.

Call coyotes.

Chase turkeys.

Learn when to move, when to wait, and when to take the shot.

You can't skip experience.

The instincts, confidence, and woodsmanship you build early will carry over into every season that follows.

Don't rush the journey.

Embrace the season you're in.

This is where most hunters mess up.

They build a great mock scrape...

Then they won't leave it alone.

They check it every week.

They walk past it constantly.

They hunt it regardless of conditions.

And then they wonder why daylight activity disappears.

Mock scrapes only work if deer feel safe using them.

Pay attention to the patterns:

Wind direction
Time of day
Time of year

If a scrape historically lights up in January, don't burn it out in October.

The data tells you when to hunt.

Your job is to listen.

Hunters debate everything.

Moon phases.

Barometric pressure.

Wind direction.

Weather apps.

But after years of watching deer, I've only found two things that consistently correlate with mature buck movement:

A doe in estrus.

And a cold front.

When those two things come together, everything changes.

Bucks expand their range, increase movement, and throw caution to the wind.

If you're trying to maximize your time in the woods, pay attention to those two factors first.
