🐞 Hope Remains
Day 29 - What God Continues to Use

So much of who I am was shaped during the years of Brittany’s illness.

I learned about love, fear, caregiving, heartbreak, faith and eventually grief in ways I never would have chosen.

I would still choose a different story if I could.

But I can also look back and see how God used those years to shape my heart. The compassion I have for hurting people, the ministry He has called me to, even the words I share here all carry pieces of what Brittany taught me.

God didn’t waste those years.

And more than 26 years after losing her, He is still using them.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

🐞 Hope Remains
Day 28 -Taking Every Thought Captive

Grief and trauma have a way of changing the stories we tell ourselves.

“I’m alone.”
“God has forgotten me.”
“Things will never get better.”

Those thoughts may come, but they don’t have to define us.

God calls us to take every thought captive and measure it against His truth, not our fear.

His faithfulness hasn’t changed, even when our emotions tell us otherwise.

Today, when grief speaks, answer it with God’s Word.

“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

Day 27 - Enough for Today

One of the hardest lessons in grief is realizing that God rarely gives us strength for tomorrow.

He gives us strength for today.

We want answers for the future. We want to know how everything will work out. We want reassurance that we’ll make it through every hard thing still ahead.

Instead, God gently reminds us to trust Him one day at a time.

His grace isn’t stored up months in advance. It meets us right where we are.

If today is all you can manage, that’s enough.

If today all you can do is whisper, “Jesus, help me,” He hears that prayer.

You don’t have to carry tomorrow’s burden before it arrives. Walk with Him today, and when tomorrow comes, His mercy will be there again.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Matthew 6:34 (NIV)

Day 26 - The Ministry I Never Wanted

If someone had told me years ago that one of the greatest ministries of my life would come from the deepest pain of my life, I never would have believed them.

I would have chosen a different story.

Every. Single. Time.

Losing Brittany will never be something I’m thankful for.

But I will always be thankful for the God who met me in my brokenness and has used my story to bring hope to others.

That doesn’t make the loss good.

It makes God good.

🐞 Hope Remains
Day 25 - Finding Peace

Grief doesn’t just affect our hearts.

Sometimes it affects our minds and our bodies too.

There are moments when my thoughts race and my nervous system feels like it’s on high alert.

In those moments, I’ve learned to stop…breathe…and return to God’s Word.

Not because it instantly makes everything better.

But because it reminds me where my peace comes from.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)

Some days I have to read that verse more than once.

Some days I have to pray it.

And some days, simply remembering that God is near is enough to take the next breath.

🐞 Hope Remains | Day 24

The Life She Still Touches

Today I spent the day with Hannah and all the grandkids. We laughed, splashed, and made memories that I’ll treasure.

At one point, I found myself thinking about Brittany.

Not because the day made me sad.

Because love has a way of showing up in the happiest moments.

It made me realize something.

Brittany is still shaping our family.

She’s in the stories we tell.

She’s in the way we love one another.

She’s in the compassion we’ve learned through loss.

She’s in the faith God has built through her life.

She may not be in the family picture, but she’ll always be part of the family story.

“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.”
Psalm 145:4 (NIV)

Day 23 - Compassion Without Carrying

One of life’s greatest challenges is learning to care deeply without carrying every burden ourselves.

God calls us to love.

To encourage.

To pray.

To walk beside one another.

But He never asks us to carry what only He can.

There is freedom in realizing we can have compassionate hearts while trusting God with what is beyond our control.

“Carry each other’s burdens…”
Galatians 6:2 (NIV)

Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is place the burden back into the hands of the One strong enough to carry it.

🐞 Hope Remains
Day 22 - What Is a Miracle?

I’ve been thinking about miracles lately.

When I was younger, I thought a miracle always meant the impossible suddenly becoming possible.

And sometimes it does.

Jesus healed the sick.

He calmed storms.

He raised the dead.

But as I’ve walked through more of life, I’ve come to see miracles a little differently.

Sometimes the miracle is the healing.

Sometimes the miracle is the strength to keep walking when healing doesn’t come the way we hoped.

Sometimes it’s peace that doesn’t make sense.

Sometimes it’s joy returning after unimaginable loss.

Sometimes it’s seeing God’s faithfulness one more day.

Paul prayed for God to remove his “thorn,” but instead God answered,

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

Maybe a miracle isn’t only God changing our circumstances.

Maybe it’s God changing us in the middle of them.

I still believe God works miracles.

And sometimes…the miracle is discovering He has been carrying us all along.

Day 21 - A Faithful God

Tonight, during our Bible study, I found myself thinking about the Old Testament in a different way.

It’s easy to read about kings, prophets, battles, and wandering people and miss the bigger picture.

But woven through every page is the same message:

God is faithful.

People failed.

Nations turned away.

Seasons changed.

Yet God never stopped pursuing His people or keeping His promises.

As I thought about that, I realized my own story isn’t much different.

There have been seasons of joy and seasons of heartbreak. Moments when my faith was strong and moments when I simply held on.

Through every season, God’s faithfulness has never changed.

The same God who walked with His people then is walking with us now.
