The steady, rhythmic creak of iron-rimmed wheels against stone is the first thing that brings you back to consciousness...

​You blink away the dirt and sweat, only to find the world blurred through thick, rusted iron bars. You're in the back of a horse-drawn cage, jolting violently over a rutted forest trail. When you try to move, the cold bite of coarse rope cuts into your wrists and ankles. You are bound hand and foot, stripped of your gear, and moving deeper into unfamiliar, hostile territory.

​Outside the bars, the dense canopy of the frontier woods blocks out the sun. The only sounds are the heavy thud of hooves, the low, murmuring voices of your captors up on the driver's bench, and the ominous clatter of arrows rattling in quivers nearby.

​You don't know where they're taking you, or what dark oath your captors have sworn. All you know is that survival starts now. The knots are tight, the cage is locked, and the road ahead is unforgiving.

The smell of stale ale, cold hearth ash, and melted tallow candle wax is the first thing that forces your senses awake.

Your head throbs with a vicious, rhythmic ache. You lift your face from the scarred wood of the tavern table, blinking against the dim light. You look around. The tavern is completely hollow stools are overturned, the hearth is dead, and the heavy oak door is barred from the inside. There is no barkeep. No patron laughing. Just an eerie, heavy silence.

You reach into your mind for a name, a hometown, or even a memory of how you stumbled into this place but you find absolutely nothing. Your past is a blank slate, swallowed by shadows.

Then, you notice the scraping sound.

Sitting directly across the table from you is a figure shrouded in a tattered, mud-stained cloak. A heavy staff rests against their shoulder, and a cowl obscures most of their face, leaving only a weathered chin and a piercing, unblinking gaze visible in the gloom. They have been watching you sleep.

The figure leans forward slightly, the wood of the chair groaning under their weight, and speaks in a low, gravelly rasp:

"Finally. I was beginning to think the poison took too strong a hold. Dust yourself off, friend. We have an oath to keep, and the road doesn't care that you've forgotten it."
