Ok hear me out…
1. Focusing on what I thought would “sell” never works for me. Not that I don’t think at all about what others would want to purchase, it’s just not my focus. I find that the more genuine and original my work is, the more people go crazy for it. This was essential to pinpointing my niche in this industry and mastering my own “style” as an artist.
2. Weirdly, if I wear dark clothing and things that don’t match my booth at markets…my sales are significantly lower! But, if I dress to match my pottery, people ALWAYS comment on how much they love my style. It’s a very easy way to begin an interaction with a potential client without even really initiating it!
3. My favorite thing to buy from other artists is…POTTERY. Listen, if I’m worried about what other potters are doing and how I compare, then I’m not benefiting my own business. Making connections helps me so much when I have questions about markets, issues I’m having with clay/glazes/my kiln, and it helps boost my following on IG when people see me share my knowledge and interacting with other artists!
4. Ok, so I’m gonna be honest…painting your ceilings is not for the faint of heart and my neck will forever be protesting the abuse it took to get my studio looking this good. BUT, now every photo/video I take for social media is INSTANTLY elevated and eye catching.
5. Let’s be honest, normal isn’t cool. Weird is cool. I don’t know that I really need to explain this one. 💁🏼♀️
