Next Wednesday I turn 55, and instead of having a traditional birthday party, I figured we’d do something a little more my style.

So we’re opening up The Kindred Pub for the evening.

Nothing fancy. No big birthday production. Just a fire going, some Irish music, good people, good conversation and whatever you’d like to bring to drink.

Come sit around Kindred, hang out by the fire and enjoy the evening with us.

No gifts. No pressure. Just come as you are.

Wednesday, September 9th — around 6:30 PM

Location:
5321 Hopewell Rd
New Kent, VA

Parking for Kindred: use the driveway right next to Lebanon Baptist Church.

Bring whatever you’d like to drink, and if you have a favorite chair you like sitting around a fire in, bring that too.

Maybe this becomes the first of many Kindred Pub Nights.

Not a bad way to kick off 55.

Introducing KINDRED

There are places you can look at in a photograph and understand.

Kindred isn’t one of them.

You have to walk into it.
Stand beneath it.
Look around.
Touch the wood.
And realize what you are actually standing inside.

Because Kindred was never supposed to exist.

When I first began building this space, I called it The Ruins of the Great Hall. I thought I was building something that looked as though it had once stood here long ago—a forgotten gathering place slowly reclaimed by the forest.

But as I placed the final pieces, I stepped back and realized something.

This wasn’t a ruin at all.

Everywhere I looked, I saw life.

The massive trunks. The crooked branches. The scarred pieces of wood. Limbs from different trees that had fallen at different times and in different places.

Pieces that had been left on the forest floor.

Pieces most people would have cut up, burned, hauled away or simply stepped over.

And somehow, here, they belonged together.

That is when this place told me its name.

KINDRED

Kindred means connected.
Related not necessarily because you came from the same place, but because something deeper has brought you together.

And I couldn't think of a better word for what I had built—or for what happens at a wedding.

Look closely at Kindred.

Pieces from completely different trees—trees that could never have grown together in life—now stand together as though they were always meant to.

What was grown different, what was separated, what fell apart… became part of the same tree again.

And isn't there something beautifully familiar about that?

Two people arrive with different stories.

Two families arrive with different histories.

Friends come from different places and different chapters of their lives.

Some meet for the very first time.

Then a couple says “I do.”

And afterward, everyone comes here.

Drinks are poured.
Glasses are raised.
Food is shared.
Stories are told.
Strangers introduce themselves.
Families laugh together.

And for those few hours, all those separate branches become something new.

Kindred.

That is what makes this place different.

It wasn't ordered from a catalog.

It wasn't designed to look like another wedding venue.

There will never be another one exactly like it, because I couldn't build another one exactly like it if I tried.

Nature made every piece. I simply listened to where each one wanted to go.

The Enchanted Nest itself began with land that had been neglected and left to decay. Fallen trees and forgotten pieces were everywhere.

But I've learned something while building this place:

Being fallen doesn't mean your story is finished.

Five old stumps could become part of a Celtic cross.

A fallen tree could become something people stop to photograph.

Branches that would normally become firewood could become windows.

And pieces of trees that never shared the same roots could someday stand together and shelter the celebration of two families becoming one.

Maybe that's why Kindred feels so alive.

It isn't a replica of something old.

It is a second story.

And now it gets to become part of yours.

So when you see this video, understand that you're only seeing wood, branches and photographs on a screen.

To understand Kindred, you have to experience it.

You have to walk through those trees, climb those steps, pass beneath that doorway and stand in the middle of something that simply shouldn't exist anywhere else.

And perhaps one day, you'll raise a glass here surrounded by the people you love, look around and realize—

your story has become one of the stories these trees will carry next.

Welcome to KINDRED at The Enchanted Nest.

Where separate branches become one story.

ONE LAST SNEAK PEEK BEFORE THE REVEAL…

Today I began placing some of the final pieces along the front.

Then I stepped back.

And something changed.

For months, I thought I knew what this place would be called.

The Ruins of the Great Hall.

But standing there looking at it, I realized I had gotten the name wrong.

Because I wasn’t looking at ruins.

I was looking at pieces of trees that had once grown separately.

Different species.
Different roots.
Different shapes.
Different stories.

Trees that fell and were left where they landed. Branches that broke and seemed to have reached the end of what they were created to do.

But as I’ve picked up, carried, cut, fitted and placed every one of these pieces, I’ve felt something I didn’t expect.

Every piece seemed to have something to say.

And when I finally stepped back and saw them together, I understood it.

When these trees fell, they were given a possibility they never had while standing:

the opportunity to become something the seed they came from was never created to become.

Pieces from trees that could never have grown together in life now reach across one another.

What grew separately now holds together.

And suddenly, The Ruins of the Great Hall didn’t make sense anymore.

This wasn’t a story about what had been lost.

It was a story about what had been brought together.

And isn’t that what will happen right here?

People will arrive carrying different names, different families, different histories and different roots.

They’ll eat together.

Raise a glass together.

Tell stories together.

Laugh together.

And because two people chose one another, people who may have otherwise remained strangers will leave connected.

So today, the trees finally told me the name of the place I’ve been building.

KINDRED

Not because everything here came from the same tree.

Because it didn’t.

And that’s the whole point.

The final reveal is coming.

But for now… meet the beginning of Kindred.

SNEAK PEEK #6 — THE RUINS ARE TAKING SHAPE

Another part of The Ruins of the Great Hall is complete.

For almost 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of the wedding business. I’ve visited venues, performed ceremonies in some beautiful places, and seen a lot of incredible ideas along the way.

But I’ve never been to—or seen—anything quite like what is taking shape here.

And I don’t say that to suggest we’re better than anyone else. We’re simply different.

This is being created almost entirely from what nature has given us. Fallen trees, twisted branches, weathered wood and pieces that most people would probably walk right past have slowly become something I can only describe as nature’s own work of art.

There was no blueprint for it. Much of it has been created one piece at a time, letting the shape of the wood determine where it belongs.

And I’m finally beginning to see what I pictured in my head.

My hope is that when people visit The Enchanted Nest, they don’t just see another wedding venue. They walk through it, explore it, notice all the little details—and when they leave, they feel like they experienced someplace genuinely enchanted.

A place unlike anywhere they’ve been before.

And I’ve saved something special for the next sneak peek…

The front—and what I believe will become one of the most beautiful parts of the entire build: the entrances.

Sneak Peek #7 is next.

WEDDING RESALE & VENDOR MARKET — POSTPONED

We wanted to give everyone an update regarding our upcoming Wedding Resale & Vendor Market at The Enchanted Nest.

Unfortunately, we have made the decision to postpone the event.

Rather than rush into another date, we’re going to take a little more time and come back with an event that is bigger, better organized, and gives both our wedding vendors and couples plenty of time to participate.

The idea behind this event is something we still really believe in — bringing together engaged couples, newlyweds with wedding items to resell, and local wedding professionals all in one place.

So this is not goodbye to the event — just a change of plans.

If you were planning to attend, sell wedding décor, or participate as a vendor, please stay tuned. A new date will be announced once it is finalized.

Thank you to everyone who showed interest and supported the idea. We look forward to welcoming you to The Enchanted Nest when the Wedding Resale & Vendor Market returns.

SNEAK PEEK #5 — THE WALLS OF THE GREAT HALL

Another piece of The Ruins of the Great Hall has come to life.

The visitor-side walls and windows are now complete.

Every section has been built by hand using fallen limbs and branches gathered right here from the property. No two pieces are straight. No two sections are exactly alike. And that’s exactly how I wanted it.

The dark framework gives the appearance of what remains of an old structure, while the natural branches weave their way through the walls and windows—as though the forest has slowly been reclaiming the Great Hall for years.

And we’re still not finished.

There are more details to build, more pieces of the story to add, and some of the biggest features haven’t been revealed yet.

The Ruins are rising.
