📖 James 3:16

“For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” (James 3:16)

James has been showing us what happens when envy and selfish ambition are allowed to take root in our hearts. Today, he shows us where they can lead: disorder and every kind of evil practice.

Envy says, “I want what they have.”
Selfish ambition says, “I want what benefits me.”

When these attitudes begin directing our choices, relationships can become divided, priorities can become distorted, and peace can quickly disappear.

That’s why examining our hearts matters.

God doesn’t simply want us to change the behavior others can see. He wants to transform what is happening inside us, because what takes root in the heart eventually produces fruit in our lives.

✨ Takeaway: Pay attention to the root before it becomes the fruit.

Instead of allowing comparison or selfish ambition to grow, ask God to replace them with gratitude, humility, contentment, and love.

📖 James 3:15

“Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.” (James 3:15)

Yesterday, James warned us about bitter envy and selfish ambition hiding in our hearts. Today, he tells us something important about the “wisdom” those attitudes produce: it isn’t wisdom from God.

Not everything that sounds intelligent, reasonable, successful, or appealing is godly wisdom.

James describes false wisdom in three powerful ways: earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. It focuses our attention away from God and toward ourselves, our desires, our pride, and the values of the world.

That’s why we need discernment.

Instead of simply asking, “Does this make sense to me?” we also need to ask, “Does this agree with God’s Word and reflect His character?”

✨ Takeaway: Not every voice that sounds wise is speaking God’s wisdom. Test what you hear, what you believe, and even what your own heart tells you against the truth of God’s Word.

Today, ask yourself:

📖 James 3:14

“But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.” (James 3:14)

Yesterday, James showed us that true wisdom is demonstrated through a good life and deeds done in humility. Today, he asks us to look beneath our actions and examine something deeper: our motives.

Envy can make us compare what we have with what someone else has. Selfish ambition can turn our focus toward getting ahead, being noticed, or proving ourselves. James warns us not to hide these attitudes, excuse them, or pretend they aren’t there.

Instead, we can bring them honestly before God.

God isn’t only concerned with what we do. He cares about why we do it. True wisdom begins with a heart willing to be examined and changed by Him.

✨ Takeaway: Don’t just examine your actions. Examine the heart behind them.

Today, ask yourself:

❤️ “What is motivating my heart?”

Is it love or recognition?
Service or comparison?
God’s glory or my own?

📖 James 3:13

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” (James 3:13)

What does true wisdom look like?

James tells us that wisdom isn’t proven by how much we know, how well we speak, or how many answers we have. True wisdom is demonstrated by the way we live.

A wise life produces good deeds, but James adds something important: those deeds are done with humility. Godly wisdom doesn’t need applause or recognition. It quietly shows itself through kindness, service, obedience, compassion, and the way we treat others.

✨ Takeaway: Wisdom isn’t just something we know. It’s something we live.

Today, instead of asking, “How much do I know?” ask:

🌿 “Does the way I live show God’s wisdom?”

💬 What’s one way you can put godly wisdom into action today?

📖 James 3:12

“My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.” (James 3:12)

A fig tree produces figs. A grapevine produces grapes. James uses something simple and familiar to teach us a deeper spiritual truth: what is within us will eventually be revealed by what comes out of us.

Yesterday, James asked whether fresh water and salt water could flow from the same spring. Today, he takes that lesson one step further. Just as a tree is recognized by its fruit, our words and actions reveal what is taking root in our hearts.

We can’t consistently produce the fruit of Christ while allowing bitterness, anger, jealousy, or resentment to grow unchecked within us. God wants to transform us from the inside out so that our lives naturally produce fruit that reflects Him.

✨ Takeaway: Instead of only asking, “What am I saying?” ask, “What kind of fruit is my heart producing?”

When Christ is shaping the roots, His character should increasingly show up in the fruit. 🌿

📖 James 3:11

“Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?” (James 3:11)

James asks a simple question with a powerful message. A spring is known by the water that flows from it. In the same way, our words reveal what is flowing from within our hearts.

It’s easy to focus only on controlling what comes out of our mouths, but God wants to work deeper than that. He wants to transform the source.

When our hearts are filled with God’s truth, love, mercy, and grace, those things should increasingly flow into the way we speak to and about others.

✨ Takeaway: Don’t only ask God to change your words. Ask Him to change the heart your words are flowing from.

Before you speak today, pause and ask:

📖 James 3:9-11

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?” (James 3:9-11)

James asks us to look closely at the consistency of our words. We can praise God in one moment and then use that same mouth to criticize, insult, gossip about, or tear down someone He created in His image.

James simply says, “This should not be.”

Just as fresh water and salt water should not flow from the same spring, our words should reflect the heart God is shaping within us. Honoring God isn’t only about the words we speak to Him. It should also be seen in the words we speak to and about others.

✨ Takeaway: If we praise the Creator, let’s also remember the value of the people He created. Before speaking about someone today, ask: Do my words reflect how God sees this person?
