Giorgio Armani is ‘pantesco’ at heart. For over 40 years he has had a home in Cala Gadir, on the northeast side of Pantelleria, here in 1981 he bought the first three dammusi, the typical local lava stone houses with a white domed roof and thick walls, real jewels of rural architecture, which then multiplied and became seven in total. Today they form a residence which has been personalized over time, with objects dear to the designer and some Armani / Home furniture: all around is green, a real oasis dotted with 200 palm trees and a vineyard where his Passito, appropriately named Oasi, was born.
It is the Designer’s retreat, a bond that never broke, despite the apparently inhospitable, although fascinating and irresistible terrain, the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean, which had already conquered writers such as Truman Capote and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. A locus amoenus chosen by the stylist to unplug and take inspiration, surrounded only by the silence, the frinting of the cicadas, the rustle of the wind that rings between the fronds of the palm trees. An unconditional love also thanks to the culinary goodness offered by the island.
Your favorite place on the island?
‘I certainly have several, but one of them is the restaurant La Nicchia, in Scauri, inside a walled garden so typical of the island, as typical of the island is its cuisine, Pantesca salad included.’
The dish you prefer to eat at home?
‘The Pantesca salad, with capers, onions and potatoes: a simple dish, indeed poor, with an unforgettable flavor and authenticity.’
Any insider advice on places to eat and drink on the island?
"In addition to La Nicchia, around six in the evening, I like to go to the Officina, in the Tenuta di Coste Ghirlande, to have an aperitif and enjoy the sunset on the island. The Katia ice cream shop on the seafront makes an exceptional granita.'

La Baronessa di Carini
During the XVI century, the Castle of Carini (near Palermo) was inhabited by Laura Lanza di Trabia and her family. Laura was the firstborn and was betrothed to another noble, Vincenzo La Grua-Talamanca. They got married when Laura was just 14 against her will for she was in love with Ludovico Vernagallo, and became The Baroness of Carini.
After some years, her loneliness due to her husband being a workaholic and neglecting her, brought her into the arms of her old love, Ludovico. They began to have a secret affair which lasted 15 years.
On December 4th 1563, when Cesare Lanza, Laura’s father, discovered the secret relationship, he murdered his daughter and her lover. The legend says that Cesare used a dagger to kill his firstborn and, with her bloody hands, Laura left a hand imprint on a wall of the castle.
The noble family tried to hide the story and, although today this historical event is famous, we don’t have many details. In fact, it is not known for sure if the father killed Laura and Ludovico with his own hands, or if he hired assassins to kill them. Other sources say that Vincenzo, Laura’s husband, killed them.
The legend also says that there is a wall in the castle with Laura’s bloody handprint and her ghost still wanders around the castle.
The story became a legend that inspired books, movies and songs.
