I have mentioned before I want to start highlighting local producers I seek out in the area. Some are a little farther but worth the drive!

On Thursdays from 3-6 I like to check out the Main Street Farmers Market in Washington, PA. When I’m at a farmers market I want to hit up the stands that grow all the produce and vegetables on their tables, At this one it’s Swope’s Farm and Jodikinos Family Farm for me. My haul today was cherries, blueberries, black raspberry, cauliflower, broccoli and creamed honey. It’s always worth a little bit of a drive for freshly picked seasonal FRUIT.

This market has local kombucha, wine, flowers, baked goods, pastries and condiments.

I WILL have a new menu coming out TOMORROW morning for next week!! It’s been a busy busy day, stay tuned.

Got a little bit of preserving done while working on orders this week.

This has been the most challenging place I’ve ever lived in terms of quantity and variety of fresh and locally grown food. With the retirement of Eric Freeland this will be a challenging summer.

People always return from places like Europe and lament that there is better food. I’ve been there, it’s good. I spent much of my career in rich agricultural regions so I guess I always had access to the best in season food year round in America. Access is the key word here. Much of how I ate when I was farming and living on and near farms would have been beyond my budget if I was shopping for the same quality of food in a store or at a market.

Seek out local purveyors if you are able, it’s so important to support the few farmer’s markets and ranchers that we DO have so we don’t lose even more of our local foodshed. Time, money, transportation are all barriers to folks getting quality food. If you can help someone else to procure fresh food or bring them some prepared food, even better.

I’ll be sharing some of my favorite places to source ingredients periodically and I hope you also find this information helpful!
