Norouz 2085 Pirouz ~

Nowruz 2585 at the Threshold

A new year arrives, as it always does, with hyacinths, mirrors, fire, and that old Persian genius for survival.

But this year, some of Iran’s most beloved historical sites stand closed. Tom of Hafez is hushed. Persepolis waits behind locked gates. Hegmataneh (Ecbatana), older than every official statement ever issued in its name, remains where it has always been: watching.

Nowruz has never belonged to comfort. It belongs to renewal, to defiance, to the annual insistence that winter does not get the last line.

So we greet this year with grief, resilience, and tremendous hope for a free and prosperous IRan. With memory intact. With fire intact. With the unfashionable conviction that culture belongs to people, not power.

Nowruz Piruz.

May light enter, even through locked doors.

Heighten vigilance regarding Iranian cultural heritage -

In light of escalating instability in Iran and the increased risk to cultural heritage that typically accompanies such periods, IMPD International Museum Professionals Day (Est. 2014) urge museums, auction houses, dealers, and private collectors worldwide to apply heightened professional due diligence to any object of Persian/Iranian origin or with a plausible Iranian provenance. For acquisitions, consignments, and transfers from 1 January 2026 onward, acquiring entities should be ready to provide clear, verifiable documentation demonstrating lawful export, uninterrupted provenance, and compliance with applicable national laws and international instruments, including relevant UNESCO conventions.

Iran Cannot Be a Matter of Indifference to Us

The West’s engagement in supporting the protests against the regime in Tehran has declined. Feminist artists in the American diaspora are pushing back.

The U.S.-based art historian and artist Homa Taj Nasab is inconsolable about what she sees as the general lack of interest in her homeland within the American cultural scene. She says this pains her “above all because of the artists in Iran who are living through an unimaginable nightmare while at the same time recognizing the hypocrisy that so often passes as principle in the international art world.” Yet she adds that it is important that “the masks fall: people who once presented themselves as allies are revealing the limits of their compassion. It hurts, but it also clears the air.”

“Because war makes heritage damage dramatic and headline-friendly, while the slow violence done to heritage in “peacetime” rarely earns the same urgency, even when it is systemic. Iran’s heritage has been pressured for decades not only by conflict risk, but by development, environmental crisis, and institutional weakness. Sometimes the threat is a missile’s shock wave. Sometimes it is a construction project that creeps too close, an enforcement system that blinks, a budget that vanishes into bureaucracy, or a landscape that quite literally sinks.”

To the tens of thousands of Iranians who loved democracy enough to die for —
to the heroic faces we will never see,
to the names we may never learn,

we will not let the world forget you.

We will not forgive your killers.
We will pursue your murderers—and every accomplice—
from every corner of the earth, of every flag and language,
until they meet justice.

We will not accept another post-Holocaust silence:
another international shrug, another cold bureaucracy of delay—
a program of refusal dressed up as process.

Rest now—
in peace, in beauty, in power.

On this Holocaust Remembrance Day, let us honor Iranian suffering and protect Holocaust memory by drawing a respectful boundary:

- Name Iran’s abuses precisely: state violence, mass killings, imprisonment, censorship, persecution, forced confessions.

- Name the Holocaust precisely: genocide; extermination; industrial-scale killing.

- Refuse the competition of suffering.
