Today marks the first day of Black History Month. This month, we'll for four incredible changemakers and grant recipients of The Power of She Fund, dedicated to fostering confidence and connection through movement. Every week, we'll learn who and what inspired each woman's love of sport, art, and the outdoors, and why they've chosen to build for the next generation.

To start, we welcome Michelle Grady. As the Founder and Executive Director of , Michelle is committed to inspiring, educating, and supporting women of color on their journey towards living a healthy lifestyle through the sport of triathlon.

“I was watching Wide World of Sports with my dad, and they were covering Ironman World Championship in Kona. They covered the pros, but they also highlighted regular people. I remember their stories were so inspirational, but I never saw the sport of triathlon in my community.

When I crossed the finish line of my first race, I burst into tears. I felt so accomplished and empowered. I realized at that moment, I came from doing nothing to swimming, riding, and running. To look around and not see a face that looked like mine, understanding the challenges Black women face to be in this space, I really wanted other Black women to feel that. You can really develop as an empowered woman through sport. There is a connection between the physical, the mental, the emotional. And in our program, multi-generational training allows women and girls to learn from each other. The sport itself is so community-based, encouraging.

I would want my legacy to be that RYPE is an organization that continues to grow and provides opportunities for young girls to grow through triathlons. I want to provide opportunities that I never had. I want to touch as many girls as possible, to help them find their voice very early through sport. To help them understand that they don’t have to experience diseases that so many women of color face, from diabetes to high blood pressure. How? Focus on staying healthy.”

Today, we continue our conversation about access to nutrition in BIPOC communities with Jeanette De Angelis, Community Programs Coordinator at Earle’s on Crenshaw, an LA institution serving up nutritious food with an emphasis on those in need. Jeanette, we pass the mic to you:

“[For many people of color,] the options of healthier food are few and far between. By the time you are an adult, you are more likely to have formulated bad food habits, which can be hard to correct. Because of this, BIPOC have been known to be the leading group for a slew of health issues that can partially be attributed to unhealthy food consumption and habits. It is so important to acknowledge the connection to food and health, so that our communities can work to correct these issues.

I have always been active in volunteering and helping different communities since I was young. When I started working at Earle’s a few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to learn the wonderful history they have helping the community. Earle’s has been giving back to the BIPOC community for almost 40 years. And when the pandemic hit, they started working with government leaders and law enforcement to bring food to the most vulnerable, our elderly. Throughout the pandemic we have been able to give out over 10,000 free meals.

[To make a difference], support businesses that provide healthier food options in your communities. And talk to your local officials. They work for you! If enough people push them on a topic, like bringing better food options into the community, they will work to make it happen. The squeaky wheel gets the oil so make some noise and do your part to try to make change happen!”

We're diving in to a new topic: access to nutrition in BIPOC communities. We're honored to pass our platform to LaKiesha P. Dunn (), Senior Manager of Programming at :

"Access to nutrition is a pressing issue for BIPOC communities as they experience many health issues at a much higher rate than other communities. This is often due to limited access to grocery stores, fresh produce, health care, and community resources to encourage healthy living.

Five years ago, I began working for The Trotter Project, a nonprofit that uses culinary arts, hospitality, and agriculture education to foster enrichment, exploration and empowerment via various programs. We recognize there is a real need for fresh food and agriculture education in the communities we serve. The pandemic really highlighted this fact. We recently revitalized a community/school garden in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. And this year, The Trotter Project is introducing Farm to Classroom curriculum with hydroponic and seed to soil gardens in more schools. Our aim is to create “Sow, Grow, Eat and Educate" program opportunities for children and families, along with pathways for urban farming and food security.

Food is love, community, and empowering. When you think about family and community gatherings, they usually include food. Food is a way to share love and create connections, with traditions that keep culture alive! I just cooked black eyed peas and collard greens for New Year’s, a tradition my grandmother kept for years. Every time I follow it, I feel connected to her. Food joins families, passes love through generations, keeps our ancestors' stories alive and our community connected."

To continue December's spotlight on multi-generational BIPOC families, we're honored to pass our platform to content creator and author, Jyoti Chand ():

"There are two types of family. The family you are given and the family you choose. My children are the family I was given and my husband and his family are the ones I have chosen to be my own. Growing up, I didn't see many healthy mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationships. I witnessed a lot of animosity and volition between the women in my culture. I saw this as the norm, but I didn't want it to be the norm for me. I ventured into my relationship with my mother-in-law with a lot of intention. I chose to see her as a human being and allowed her to make her own mistakes without judgment. I gave her grace as we got to know each other and, thankfully, she did the same for me. I voiced myself directly versus through my husband. I learned from the mistakes of the relationships I saw growing up. I didn't want to repeat the narrative, I wanted to change it for my daughter.

My daughter, Kareena, is blessed to witness a blossoming relationship between her Dadi (paternal grandmother) and her mom. She sees that Dadi treats me like a daughter and I treat Dadi like I treat my own mom. My daughter sees strong women who support and love each other. Women who laugh together. Women who are comfortable being vulnerable together.
There is something so special about not only having one mother in your life, but two, who love you unconditionally.

My mother-in-law is the family I would choose over and over again. She keeps our culture alive, passing stories, native tongue and traditional meals down to my children. She shares that part of herself with all of us, allowing us to learn and cherish her family roots."

12/07/2021

We’re introducing December’s topic, BIPOC families, with a spotlight on four generations of women in the Marquez family. Read on as they share what their close-knit relationships—individually, and as a whole—mean to them.

"We are four generations of fierce Afro-Latina women. We are mothers, daughters, sisters, and best friends. We are athletes, directors, nurses, entrepreneurs, and PhD cancer researchers. It began with the matriarch, Violet, who instilled in all of us the importance of confidence, compassion, and a relentless spirit. We were not taught these values through words, but instead through the actions of each generation that came before us. We saw strong, loving relationships which became our own expectations. We witnessed perseverance and determination which became our own habits. We support each other to live our best lives. We are the first people we call to share in the joy of our successes, as well as our struggles and disappointments.

Our deep family ties were forged over years of support across the generations. Grandparents cheered at our volleyball games and practiced with us for job interviews. Aunts flew miles to see our school plays and family consults were mandatory for college decisions. And the support was always reciprocated as grandkids and great grands traveled across states to fill the bleachers for their grandmother’s Senior National’s tennis tournaments.

One of our strongest traditions centers around food. It is a focal point of all our gatherings with much energy spent on making, serving, eating, and critiquing the meals. Recipes are never written down however they continue to be passed down. Despite thousands of miles between us, we have stayed a close-knit family reuniting often to celebrate successes, cry on shoulders, and of course engage in competitive family sports. We are proud that a visit to Grandma’s house is always filled with excitement and joy and never an obligation; proud that we are all best friends by choice.

Most of all, we are proud of what we’ve built and hopeful that our deeply embedded values and traditions of support will continue to guide our future generations."
