Roofer’s $15,000 Website Mistake: The Hidden Box That Killed His Google Visibility
He was super excited. He had hired a fancy designer, picked out all the photos, and wrote the check for fifteen grand, thinking he was about to get a flood of new customers.
The website looked pretty good, professional. It had everything, or so he thought. But then a week went by, a month went by, a year went by. Still crickets.
Not one lead through his website. He was checking his phone constantly, thinking it was broken because he knew people were searching for roofers in his town, but none of them were finding him.
And so he called me. He was totally defeated, and I told him I would take a look. I went through my checklist. I checked the keywords, the page speed, the local citations, and on the surface, most of it was in order with the exception of a few things.
But then I found it deep in the website settings. The web designer had left one little box checked.
It’s a box that literally says, “Discourage search engines from indexing this site.” His beautiful, expensive, new website was telling Google to pretend it didn’t exist.
