This celebrated mining region is renowned for producing some of the world’s finest galena specimens. This is a dramatic, sculptural specimen from Bulgaria’s Madan ore field. Lustrous, jet-black sphalerite forms sharp, complex crystals—most notably the commanding pyramidal crystal at the crest—among brilliant, chrome-like silver galena crystals with blocky cubic and modified faces. Subtle growth terraces, striations, and intricate surface patterns animate the highly reflective crystal faces. The dense intergrowth, exceptional metallic luster, and strong central composition give the piece a bold, architectural presence.

Artistically, the specimen resembles a miniature city forged from polished metal: angular towers, fractured planes, and mirror-bright facets rise in a tightly balanced composition. Light moves across its surfaces in flashes of silver and pools of deep shadow, revealing an almost futuristic architecture. The dominant upper crystal serves as a dark spire, giving the piece a strong focal point and a sense of upward motion. Both imposing and elegant, it evokes a crystalline citadel suspended between geology and sculpture.

When we initially saw this piece, we were startled; The luster of both the sphalerite and galena is so intensely brilliant that the two minerals can be remarkably difficult to distinguish. Although we have handled many exceptional examples over the past 40 years, this piece is, without hesitation, the finest and most spectacular we have ever encountered.

Fluorite on Pyrite with Barite & Sphalerite

A dramatic cluster of deep emerald-green fluorite crystals rises from a densely crystallized matrix of bright, mirror-lustrous pyrite crystals. The fluorites exhibit the modified octahedral habit characteristic of Milpo material, with broad, highly reflective faces and subtle cubic modifications that create crisp geometric edges. Their excellent transparency allows light to pe*****te the crystals, producing an intense internal glow that shifts from rich forest green to vivid bottle green depending on illumination.

The pyrite matrix forms a dazzling golden foundation composed of tightly packed crystals, creating a striking color contrast with the fluorite. The metallic pyrite reflects light from every angle, enhancing the specimen's brilliance while emphasizing the saturated green fluorite above.

Nestled among the fluorite crystals is a contrasting cream-colored bladed barite crystal, providing a soft visual accent against the metallic gold and vivid green. Small dark sphalerite crystals scattered throughout the specimen add further mineralogical interest and textural complexity.

This specimen presents exceptional balance, with fluorite crystals distributed evenly across the pyrite matrix to create a natural "garden" of gemmy green crystals emerging from a glittering golden landscape. The combination of sharp crystal form, strong color saturation, high luster, and contrasting mineral associations makes it an outstanding representative of the celebrated Milpo Mine finds.

Pyrrhotite on Quartz
Nikolaevskiy Mine, Dalnegorsk,
Dalnegorsk Urban District, Primorsky Krai, Russia

A striking, bronze-colored pyrrhotite crystal dominates the specimen, perched dramatically atop a sparkling bed of radiating white quartz. The pyrrhotite exhibits a blocky, layered, pseudo-hexagonal growth habit with sharply stepped crystal faces that create a distinctive terraced texture. Its bright metallic luster contrasts with the bright clear quartz below.

The quartz forms dense sprays of slender prismatic crystals that radiate outward in clear snow-white clusters, giving the specimen a light, airy foundation that accentuates the weight and color of the sulfide. The overall composition is exceptionally balanced, with the metallic pyrrhotite appearing almost suspended above the crystalline quartz matrix.

The contrast between the warm bronze metallic sheen and the cool white quartz is characteristic of fine Dalnegorsk material, one of the world's premier localities for crystallized pyrrhotite specimens. Specimens of this style became especially famous from the Nikolaevskiy and Sovietskiy mines during the 1980s and early 1990s, where layered pseudo-hexagonal pyrrhotite crystals were found associated with quartz, calcite, sphalerite, and galena.

This is a classic display specimen that captures why Dalnegorsk pyrrhotites are regarded among the finest in the world—combining dramatic crystal form, metallic brilliance, and an exceptionally aesthetic association with delicate quartz.
