Respiratory illness season comes with A LOT of questions, so I brought in a Nurse Practitioner to put some of the most common ones to the test. 👀

As a Respiratory Therapist, these are things I hear from parents all the time: mucus color, when to suction, nebulizer use, antibiotics, and when breathing changes need medical attention.

Meanwhile, parents know exactly how this goes: they act personally betrayed for approximately 30 seconds… then breathe, eat, and sleep so much easier once all that mucus is out.

Back-to-school season means the runny noses are basically on a rotating schedule.
We can’t keep every germ away, but we can be ready when the congestion inevitably shows up.

Saline, suction, repeat as needed. The school-year survival routine we never asked for. 🤧

Tiny noses shouldn’t have to accommodate one-size-fits-all suction tips. 👃

Newborn nasal passages are incredibly small, which is why a large bulb syringe tip can feel awkward to position and may need to be inserted farther than you’d like to create effective suction.

Happy Breathing was designed with little noses in mind, which is why it comes with two tip sizes: a smaller newborn tip for the tiniest noses and a regular tip as your LO grows.

Both are designed to create suction right at the opening of the nostril, so there’s no need to push a tip deep inside.

The best products usually start with realizing what’s missing.

Before Happy Breathing, I tried the same options most parents reach for.
Some were simple but lacked effective suction.
Others worked better but came with extra pieces, cleanup, or manual effort.

Each one taught me something about what I wanted to do differently.

More consistent suction. More control. A tip designed for tiny noses. The ability to actually see what you’re removing. And a system parents could easily clean and feel confident using.

Feeding takes a lot of coordination for a little one, and a stuffy nose can make the whole process harder. 🤍

When your LO is congested, they may pull away more often, get frustrated, or have trouble staying latched because they’re trying to breathe while they eat.

A little saline + suction before feeds can help clear those tiny nasal passages and make mealtime a whole lot more comfortable.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the bottle or the appetite… it’s the boogers. 😅

CPT can be a helpful tool when your LO is dealing with mucus that’s difficult to clear. 🤍

Gentle chest physiotherapy uses positioning and percussion to help loosen secretions so they can move through the airways and be easier to cough up or suction out.

And yes, sometimes loosening everything up can come with a little cough, gag, or spit-up too. 😅

We get asked this a lot: “Can’t I just attach a manual nasal aspirator to my breast pump?”

Technically, you may see people doing it online, but it’s not something we recommend. 

Breast pumps are designed to express milk, not to provide nasal suction, so the pressure and setup aren’t specifically designed or tested for clearing little noses.

A dedicated nasal aspirator gives you suction that’s actually designed for the job, with the right tips, controlled suction levels, and a system made to collect mucus safely and hygienically.

Your breast pump already has an important job. Let it stick to that one. 😅
