Does the natural indigo dye make these fabrics softer? Don't know, but they sure do feel nice!

Today we rolled up fresh bolts of our two indigo checks and couldn't resist sharing them with you. One with a white overcheck; the other finely wrought in two blues. Yarn-dyed to that mysterious, heavenly color that only indigo can achieve.

Perfect for wardrobes modern or historical, slow fashion or grunge. Indigo is universal 💙

Do you sew for stress relief? While we were preparing to move the shop this summer,
I craved some stitching. Time to patch my husband's shirt!

The linen had torn on the back just above the beltline, where the fabric is so worn away that it looks like gauze. I basted around that area to outline the patch location, following the checked weave.

We cannibalized the front shirt tail (interestingly, the fabric was much less worn there), taking a piece half an inch larger to allow for turnings, and pinned the patch to the inside of the shirt.

After trimming the edges of the hole, I turned them under and sewed them to the patch. From the inside, I whipped the edges of the patch to the shirt. Done! Well, after I re-hemmed the shirt front :)

Given the state of the fabric, this might not last forever. But he did get a few more wears out of one of his summer favorites. And I got an hour's peace of mind with needle in hand.

Yes, he said it felt a little odd when he tucked in that short front tail!

We know you all can't get enough of "that one with the giant flowers" (i.e. our Meconopis block print) so we've got it in a new colorway.

Lychee Pink has the same oversize floral printed by hand in a cool reddish pink. If last year's hot pink version was too much for you, this one might just float your boat. 

Customers tell us they've been using the green version to make summer tops, maxi dresses, curtains and quilts, amongst other things. What's on your list?

Remember the tidbit I shared last month about cutting a flared skirt so the straight-grain seams fall on the sides of the body? We decided that a skirt hangs better with the bias area in the front.

Naturally, my next project was in direct contravention to this idea! I badly needed a new black linen skirt with big pockets. The enormous patch pockets on were a good starting point. I’ve wanted to make this since it came out a number of years ago.

I considered changing the skirt grain lines according to what I had learned, but thought that it might make the pockets unstable. (What do you think?) Instead, in search of more pocket droop, I cut the pockets on the bias. I also added more width at the opening edge by pivoting the pocket piece.

It’s not exactly as I envisioned but definitely fits the hole in my wardrobe! Worn with the genius from emily | zero/minimal waste PDF sewing patterns.

We're back! And we're excited to welcome you all to our new space. The light is amazing and the fabric looks fabulous.

This week we are open as usual, though things are still a bit untidy. We'll give you a proper tour when it looks more respectable ;)

Just had lunch in front of the window as usual, and suddenly realized that this was the last time I'll be here overlooking the rooftops of Chelsea from my secret spot behind the water tower.

When the WTC was first rebuilt, I honestly thought it was pretty meh. Having it as my view everyday changed my mind. I've enjoyed watching it reflect the ever-changing weather and moods of our city.

The jumble of water towers is wonderful, too. It's been fun introducing out-of-towners to the weird wonders of NYC up close.
And remember when they built a new tank right outside our window? Amazing!

Today the view looked dull and grey. As I typed, a cloud of mist cloaked it in mystery. I will miss this.
