We haven’t raised shipping prices since we started in 2018. Shipping has gone up a lot since then… and last month it went up a LOT more!

Why? The USPS has added a “fuel surcharge” because the cost of oil has gone up so much due to a war that no one wants.

To ship an average small package across the country now costs more than $8.

You know there’s no such things as “free shipping”, despite what the bajillionaires want you to believe.
You probably also know that independent retailers can’t fund imaginary free shipping. We just can’t afford it.

For now, our shipping fees are up just $1.50 on orders below $50. The rest haven't changed. Hopefully this will help our bottom line, but not hurt yours too much.

Buying fabric should be a moment of joy, not a source of pain!

Are you doing ? Isn’t it great to see everyone enjoying the fruits of their labor?
I’m more of a lurker — I love following along but I don’t actively participate. For one thing, I wear something MeMade every day of the year. Usually at least one sewn garment; if not (mostly in winter), a hand-knit hat or sweater. And of course my nightgown.

What I do love about May is reconnecting with one’s wardrobe as the spring things come out of the closet. I hadn’t seen the Rainbow Check since fall. How could I have forgotten that this me-mended sweater (bought in 1997) makes the perfect foil? The embroidered silk circles glow like jewels!

Nani Iro 2026 has arrived, and it doesn't disappoint. 💕 The new collection is just as exquisite as you expect, combining summery colors and luxurious fabrics.

Fine handkerchief linens, buttery silk-cotton blends, and cool double gauze. Sprinkles of gold or pearl highlight some pieces. All harmonize beautifully. And all have Naomi Ito's inimitable style.

Once you see these, you may have to rethink your summer sewing plans!

Now online at LoomAndStars.com, or come see them for yourself in our New York City shop.

My jacket has a not-so-secret secret inside. It's quilted!

Yes, I finally finished this. It was a big, crazy project, but an enjoyable one. It combined many of my favorite things: great fabric, silk threads, and a lot of hand finishing.

It began from a desire to try out our Chameleon Tweed cotton. But I wanted a little more color. How about a bright lining? Yes. How about visible hand quilting? Yes!

I also wanted an excuse to make the brilliant reversible from . However, because I quilted it, mine ended up quite different -- a single layer with bound seams and edges. The quilt sandwich consists of the tweed, flannel interlining, and a lining of vintage shot silk.

Quilting the layers had a meditative quality that was much needed through this winter of our discontent. All told, the jacket took nearly 6 months, but much of that was down time: illness, holidays, hands too dry to stitch with silks. And then, just when I was ready to sew it together, the iron died.

A blog post with all the details is in the works. Meanwhile, you can peek at the assembly in my highlights and a process post back in January. Just scroll til you see that purple!

A customer picked out this fabric combination today and it knocked our socks off! A super-fine jamdani weave + a fantastic block print. She's thinking layered tops.

Seeing people get excited about their next project is truly a never-ending pleasure.

If I'm wearing my it must be summer already. I've been telling people about this brilliant pattern from all winter. Great minds think alike -- a customer wore hers into the shop today, too.

This was one of the most intriguing (and deceptively easy) sewing projects ever. I've written more about it on the blog.
Meanwhile, my soon-to-be second top is lurking behind my head, on that bolt of green fabric!

Easiest sewing project ever! Plus it featured yet another cool tool, the glover's needle. If you haven't seen one of these before, the point is actually an extremely sharp 3-sided chisel which cuts through leather.

My new 241 Jacket needs a belt. I found a remnant of soft silver leather conveniently located in my stash. It wasn't long enough to go around my waist and had to be pieced at center back.
My dear old Featherweight doesn't like sewing anything too thick, so I opted for a few simple hand stitches in silk buttonhole twist (bought for a project made circa 1997!).

Preparing leather is easy. Mark the back with a pencil and cut out with any old scissors (not your good shears!!).
Sewing leather is fraught with peril.... That glover's needle pierces a permanent hole and you don't get a second chance. 😮

Spring paying homage to Gandhi ji in Union Square.
Did you know that Mahatma is not his actual name? It's more of an honorific. "Great Soul". A nod to his principles of truth, equality, respect for the downtrodden.

My husband was raised to believe in these principles, as I was raised to the Golden Rule. Both philosophies now appear to be deeply unfashionable in many parts of the world. But in our family we still honor these ideals, both in life and in business. Let us not walk alone.

Not incidentally, he also brought about the rebirth of handloom fabrics. Initially a means of subverting oppression, self-reliance became a way of life. Thank you, Bapuji.
