This just makes sense

At a Killeen press conference, Texas state Rep. James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, pushed back on the usual red-vs-blue frame when asked why he thinks he can win statewide.

Talarico said he is “not interested in turning Texas blue,” saying his goal is to fight for all 31 million Texans — Democrats, independents and Republicans. He argued Texas would be better as a “purple” state, with competitive elections forcing politicians in both parties to stay accountable.

In the same exchange, he said working Texans across the political spectrum are facing high costs for groceries, gas, health insurance and child care, while veterans struggle to access mental health care and transition services.

Did they really do all these things?

You better believe they did!

Are you planning on voting by mail this year? Hundreds of thousands of New Mexicans vote by mail every year. Despite President Trump’s threats to fast-track major changes to the absentee voting process, election officials are encouraging New Mexicans to vote by mail if they want. If you request an absentee ballot right now, you’ll be sent a ballot starting Oct. 6 if your application is accepted.

Once you’ve filled it out and signed it, you can mail it or hand-deliver your ballot before 7 p.m. on Nov. 3. You can also track your ballot using a website from the Secretary of State.

Have you ever used New Mexico’s online ballot tracking tool to monitor your vote?

What’s missing here, there is unhappiness on both sides of the political aisle. That is not taking into consideration independents.

What do you think?

“The emerging frustrations on the left offer a preview of some of the pressures that await Jeffries if the party can flip the chamber next year, particularly as a new crop of far-left progressive candidates threaten not to support him for leader post-election.

“I think what we’ve seen around the country is that people all over are dissatisfied. They’re not happy with the administration.”

The left wing of the Democratic Party flourished this summer as fed-up liberals in key races across the country have eschewed traditional, more moderate candidates in favor of hard-charging progressives.

Power should answer to people, not rule over them.

What makes a democracy strong? A constitution carved in marble, or the humility to admit we don’t know everything? In With Honors (1994), Joe Pesci’s Simon Wilder, a homeless man with a surprising grasp of history, delivers a spine-stiffening rebuttal to Gore Vidal’s elitist professor. In just a few lines, Simon reframes American power, not as something bestowed by intellect or title, but as something earned by listening and changing. “The president isn’t an elected king, no matter how many bombs he can drop,” he says. In an age where political ego often eclipses public good, it’s a reminder that real leadership is about humility, not authority. Government should be fluid, accountable, and human, not a monument to its own self-importance.

More than Harvard, this film explores the cracks between privilege and principle, and how sometimes the person with the least is the one who sees the most clearly. Simon’s words challenge the myth that wisdom only comes with degrees or podiums. He doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but he defends the right to question those who claim to. At a time when trust in institutions feels uncertain, this scene reminds us: power should listen before it leads. It should serve, not reign.

With Honors (1994), directed by Alek Keshishian, stars Brendan Fraser, Joe Pesci, Moira Kelly, Patrick Dempsey, and Josh Hamilton. It’s a deeply moving dramedy that explores the unexpected friendship between a privileged Harvard student and a homeless man who takes possession of his thesis. It’s also just a great watch. Pesci’s performance, equal parts wit and grit, earned critical praise for its warmth and gravity. The film is an underrated gem that asks timely questions about class, intellect, and dignity.

What’s another film or tv show that dismantles power as sharply as this one?

Residents aren’t backing down after Texas Republicans eliminated 92 polling locations in Tarrant County — a key battleground that could help turn the state blue in the midterms.

Pete Buttigieg’s efforts to help Democrats regain power are taking on a new focus: state legislatures.

He is starting by backing a crop of mostly long-shot, down-ballot Democrats in his former backyard. The slate of endorsements in the Indiana state House and Senate, shared first with us, is the first move in what his team says will be a number of state-by-state endorsements.

“I’m looking for chances to show the sort of coalition we’re building, and I’m drawn to places where Democrats have faced headwinds for many years,” he told us.
