I stayed at the shop late tonight to do some sanding and painting and listen to the replay of John Mayer’s recent show in the Hamptons.

Whenever I stay to work on projects after hours, I turn on LIFE with John Mayer. I’ve been doing it for a couple of years now, since not long after the station launched, and it’s a ritual I look forward to.

I love the way John journeys through the music we grew up with while also exploring new artists. It reminds me of the years I spent as a teenager exchanging mix tapes with my friends back home in Connecticut while my family was living in San Diego (which is what ultimately led me to Grateful Dead).

This particular evening, it was John’s conversation with Andy Cohen that I especially wanted to listen to. Of course, like most Deadheads, I was curious to hear what John thinks his Grateful Dead future looks like, but, I was more interested in learning what his creative life has been since the end of Dead & Company. After all, that’s something I’ve been grappling with too. As much as I’d love to see him play my favorite songs again, I also understand and can relate to wanting some time first to see what feelings the grief makes room for.

The comment that stuck with me the most was almost an aside, nearly skipped over for the next question coming. Speaking of Bob Weir, John said, “That guy is always with me.”
