Today, August 13, 2026, marks the centennial of Fidel Castro’s birth!

We’re continuing to commemorate 100 Years of Fidel with our newest release “100 Posters of the Cuban Revolution with Fidel”, the first art book published between 1804 Books and Casa De Las Américas! The book was curated by Cuban designer Pepe Mendendez and features essays from Pulitzer Prize-winner Alice Walker, writer Abel Prieto, and Manolo De Los Santos, as well as poetry from Nancy Morejón. available in-person and online at 1804books.com!

We stand firmly with the Cuban people who for over six decades, have suffered the brunt of a brutal U.S. blockade that halts Cuba’s economy, and restricts life-sustaining materials like medicine, fuel, and food. Today, Trump’s tightened oil blockade continues to cause unprecedented blackouts as the US continues to threaten war on the island. This book is crucial for the moment! One hundred years after Fidel’s birth, we commemorate his life, and we stand in solidarity with the Cuban people and demand an end to the U.S. Blockade!

BLACK AUGUST IS HERE! And you guessed it, we have a favorite tenet for the month…STUDY! 📚✊🏾

Born out of the Black revolutionary tradition inside San Quentin prison in 1979, Black August is a sacred time of remembrance, reflection, and resistance. Its core principles call us to study, fast, train, and fight and right now, we’re answering that call with reverence and purpose.

Join us at 1804 Books at The People’s Forum as we commemorate Black August by deliberately and reverently diving into the study of Black liberation struggles, past and present. As we observe this month of intentional political education, we invite you to come through and buy your study materials at 1804 Books or online at 1804books.com!

📖 Come see us this week at 1804 Books at The People’s Forum! We’ve got a selection of essential history, political analysis, and literature, including Children of the Ghetto by Elias Khoury and Iraq, Afghanistan and the Imperialism of Our Time by Aijaz Ahmad.

In Children of the Ghetto, novelist Elias Khoury tells the story of the Palestinian experience through the life of Adam Dannoun, a survivor of the Nakba. Blending history, memory, and fiction, Khoury explores exile, dispossession, and the enduring struggle for dignity, offering a powerful meditation on how colonial violence shapes generations while affirming the resilience of the Palestinian people.

In Iraq, Afghanistan and the Imperialism of Our Time, Marxist scholar Aijaz Ahmad examines the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as expressions of contemporary imperialism. Situating these invasions within the broader dynamics of global capitalism, Ahmad analyzes the political, economic, and ideological forces that drove endless war, exposing how military intervention serves imperial power while devastating entire societies.

📕 Join us for the book launch of Kyle Carrero Lopez’s electrifying debut collection, PARTY LINE, which centers three interconnected forces: social life, US-Cuba relations, and the lives of Black people in the United States and Cuba. Having first launched his chapbook MUSCLE MEMORY at The People’s forum in 2022, Kyle returns with writers Jasmine Sanders and Elisa Gonzalez for readings to celebrate his newest work.

📝 Through familial, satirical, and geopolitical lenses, Party Line considers how countries—and people—wield power over those they have othered. Alternating between humor and lyric severity, playfulness and political critique, these poems negotiate contradiction with linguistic dexterity and critical consciousness, proving that political poetry can be both serious and joyously alive.
