5 Tips for Decoupaging With Rice Paper

1. Start with a light background
Rice paper can become somewhat translucent once decoupage medium is applied. A white or light-colored background helps the colors and details in your design stay bright and vibrant.

2. Apply a thin layer of decoupage medium
You don’t need to flood the surface. Apply a thin, even coat where you’ll be placing your paper. Too much medium can make the paper overly wet and harder to work with.

3. Place your rice paper gently
Position your paper carefully and lower it onto the surface rather than pressing or dragging it around. Once it begins absorbing the medium, excessive repositioning can cause tearing or distortion.

4. Smooth from the center outward
Gently work toward the edges to remove air pockets and wrinkles. Don’t aggressively rub or repeatedly brush wet rice paper—it becomes more delicate once saturated.

5. Let it dry before sealing
Allow the paper and adhesive underneath to dry completely before applying your topcoat. Then apply thin coats of your preferred sealer or decoupage medium, allowing adequate drying time between coats.

1. Let your paint dry completely — Even if the surface feels dry, moisture can still be trapped underneath and cause a cloudy or milky finish.

2. Apply thin layers of decoupage medium — Heavy coats take much longer to dry and can trap moisture, leaving a white or cloudy appearance.

3. Let each layer dry before adding the next — Don’t rush from paper to topcoat. Give the adhesive and each additional coat time to dry clear.

4. Use a clean, completely dry brush — If you use the same brush for paint and decoupage medium, wash and dry it thoroughly. Leftover paint or water can contaminate your medium.

5. Keep your decoupage medium clean — Avoid dipping a brush with paint, water, or other products into the container. Even a small amount of contamination can affect how clearly it dries.

You don’t need scissors to get the perfect edge on decoupage paper.

* Paintbrush — paint a thin line of water, wait a few seconds, then gently tear along it.
* Your fingertip — dip your finger in water and trace where you want the tear. This makes the technique feel very accessible.
* Cotton swab/Q-tip — great for curves and smaller, more controlled areas.
* Water brush pen — probably the neatest alternative because the water is already inside the brush.
* Small sponge or makeup sponge — dab water around an irregular shape for a softer, more organic torn edge.
* Cotton ball — lightly dampened and dragged along the paper; deliberately less precise.
* Fine-tip squeeze bottle — a tiny controlled line of water could work well, although I’d demonstrate carefully so you don’t oversaturate the paper.
* Wooden skewer or toothpick dipped in water — interesting for tiny areas and detailed curves, especially around flowers or leaves.
