Fachralo prayer Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus

Age: circa 1870

Size: 4′.7″x3′.7″ (140×109 cm)

This classic southwest Caucasian prayer rug shows an abrashed red field with polychrome bugs supporting a dark blue shouldered sub field with a red and ivory layered cartouche enclosing a central hooked square.The ivory main border additionally displays stepped triangles in red,green,blue,yellow and pairs of stepped red leaves.The blue minor borders host tiny crosses.Around the sub field is a green frame with a zig zag pattern.There are four red and yellow and red and ivory narrow barber pole lines in the border system.Attractive abrash is displayed both at the top of the field and in the outer upper border.The selvedges are bande in pile colors.All the colors are from natural sources.,The piece is in good condition.

Khamseh bird rug from south west Persia (Iran)

Age: dated 1313=1895

Size: 4′.7″x3′.5″ (140×104 cm)

This extremely finely woven high quality tribal piece shows a navy field uniformly decorated with characteristic Khamseh chickens.In addition there are other smaller birds and a variety of upright flowers along with lesser stylized rosettes.At the top corners of the field are the numbers 13;introducing a date of 1313 =1895.The attractive main border shows connected blue elements along with tiny boxes.The flanking golden minor borders host bars and tiny flowers.There are four navy and ivory dotted narrow lines in the border system.The red and green selvedges are original and intact.At each end is a pile panel in red and green.The wool is extremely lustrous and the weave is extremely tight.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.

Kuba rug from Kuba district, eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: dated 1273: 1856 Christian date

Size: 4′.0″x2′.7″ (122×79 cm)

This east Caucasian scatter shows a navy field with a pattern of offset columns of house shaped arrowheads.Detail colors include:shades of red,shades of blue,green,yellow,brown,ivory and fuchsine.The abrashed red main border employs separated floating leaves.The inner ivory minor border presents a chain of hexagons enclosing diamonds in various colors.The outermost minor border hosts reversing carnations on a dark blue ground.The rug bears a date of 1273.There are five narrow barber pole lines in red and ivory and black and yellow in the border system.The blue selvedges are intact.The weave is tight and compact.The colors are harmonious and attractive.The piece is in good condition.

Shahsavan soumak bag from Moghan Savalan area,northwest Persia

Age: circa 1825

Size: 1′.11″x1′.10″ (58×56 cm)

This piece belongs to a special group of Shahsavan soumak bags which is sought after by connoisseurs.,The ivory field shows a central ivory octogram,which in turn,displays a focal octagon with palmette extenders.In the corners are four burnt orange octagons with hooked motifs.There are numerous small animals flanking main medallion.The madder red main border show iconic reversing birds and anchor diamonds.The ivory minor borders feature double chains of diamonds in various colors.All the colors are from natural and vegetable sources.The weave is extremely tight and the condition is good except for some minor loose edging visible from the picture.

Kazak long rug from southwest Caucasus

Age: circa 1880

Size: 8′.9″x4′.5″ (267×135 cm)

The madder red field hosts a double keyhole medallion pattern,edged in ivory with repeating colorful combs.At both faceted ends is an ivory octagon with a ram’s horn center.In the center of the dark blue medallion are two red octagons along with tiny diamonds, boxes,stars and lattice fragments.The implicit inner border shows stars-in-octagons in various colors.The extremely striking and wide ivory main border shows a polychrome crab pattern including aubergine.There is an outer red and blue triangle reciprocal minor border.There are two red and yellow and red and white barber pole lines in the border system.The wool is soft and lush.The broad red selvedges are intact and original.At the top end is a flatwoven finishing.All the colors are from natural sources.This attractive piece is in good pile and condition.

Bordjalou Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus

Age: circa 1860

Size: 7′.8″x5′.0″ (234×152 cm)

The extremely bold ivory zigzagging meander shows an unusual charcoal,red,blue,navy,blue/green triangles in the reserves.The attractive red field shows three semi-conforming hooked lozenges in ivory,blue and blue/green.At the center of the medallions are lazy S’s,hooked elements and a quartered box.In addition there are several lazy S’s in the field too.Further ones and boxes appear in the main border.The inner and outer minor borders both show reversing triangles in blue,charcoal,navy and red.There are four red and white barber pole lines in the border system.All the colors are from natural sources.The black color triangles in the main border is very rare and sought after by connoisseurs.The piece is in good condition.

Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1890

Size: 6′.6″x4′.5″ (198×135 cm)

The dark blue field shows a pole medallion with red serrated finial hexagons,and a center stepped hexogram nesting further hexagons in blue,yellow,red,ivory and green.At the center of the red motifs are ivory hexagons with stars.,In the reserves are eight hooked elements.There are several stars,diamonds and other attractive motifs in the field.The ivory main border hosts an interesting design in yellow,burgundy,aubergine,green,red,navy and blue.There are two reciprocal wave pattern minor borders in red and green and in black and blue.In addition there are two tertiary borders,both in reciprocal keyhole pattern in red and green and red and blue.There are six barber pole narrow lines in the border system.At each end of the rug is a full flatwoven finish followed by a warp macrame band.All the colors are from natural sources.The condition of this beautiful piece is good.I don’t use “very good” for condition but most of my rugs are in better condition than “good”.And so is this one.

Kuba rug from Kuba district,eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1895

Size: 4′.10″x3′.6″ (147×107 cm)

The navy ground shows three columns of eight hooked diamonds,all enclosing small octagons in red,blue,ivory and yellow.The secondary elements are generally stars within small octagons or along the sides of the field even smaller octagons.Lazy S’s,tiny diamonds,quincunxes,diamonds,dots and plant forms occupy the reserves of the field.There is a keyhole reciprocal edges the field.The ivory main border shows nested triangles with hooks in various colors.The medium blue outer minor border displays connected tiny diamonds in groups of four.There are three narrow barber pole lines in the border system.The wide navy selvedges are intact and at each end is a flatwoven band followed by a wide ivory warp macrame strip.The handle is firm and leathery.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good pile and condition.

Akstafa prayer rug from southeast Caucasus

Age: circa 1870

Size: 5′.4″x2′.10″ (163×86 cm)

This attractive Akstafa prayer rug shows an ivory field with a three column lattice of offset palmettes in shades of:yellow;ivory;brown;burgundy;aubergine,burnt orange;shades of red;shades of blue and shades of green.The faceted floating wide arch rises above a comb and a ritual pentagon.The compact spandrels both host small hooked devices and rosettes.The madder red main border presents interlocking elements in various colors and most of them display a small detail like a bird or medallion.The abrashed blue minor borders both show rosettes and other interesting motifs.Closest to the field is a minor border of black and blue reciprocal triangles.There are four black and white barber pole narrow lines in the border system.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition except for new ivory selvedges and several minor old repairs done professionally.

Fachralo prayer Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus

Age: circa 1885

This iconic south Caucasian prayer rug shows a rich madder red field decorated with stylized bugs,and displaying a dark blue niche and a re-entrant sub-field.At the center is an ivory cartouche embedded in a conforming red medallion.Additionally in the sub-field are rosettes and more stylized bugs.The sub-field is edged by a teal band.The ivory slant leaf and chalice border is flanked by red and blue and yellow and blue triangle reciprocals.There are four barber pole lines in the border system.At the bottom end is a red flatwoven finish.Square format makes this prayer rug especially attractive.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
