When history calls, what do you choose—safety or courage?

Some run from danger.
Others run toward it.

They step forward when fear would be easier. They sacrifice when silence would be safer. And often, they do it without knowing how history will one day tell their story.

History does not simply choose its heroes. People make choices—and history remembers them.

Years later, names may be debated and events reexamined. But one truth remains: freedom has a price, and someone before us paid it.

Kosovo’s history belongs not only to those whose names we know, but to every soldier, mother, father, son, daughter, and family who sacrificed for the hope of freedom.

🇺🇸🤍Every morning, the names are still remembered. 🕊️🌹

At the 9/11 Memorial, a single white rose is placed on the name of each victim on what would have been their birthday.

One white rose.
One name.
One life that mattered.

Among nearly 3,000 names, it is a quiet reminder that September 11 was never only about numbers.

They were mothers and fathers.
Sons and daughters.
Husbands and wives.
Friends, colleagues, neighbors.

They had birthdays. They had plans. They had people waiting for them to come home.

And more than two decades later, someone still arrives with a white rose and says, without saying a word:

You were here.
You were loved.
You are remembered.

Today, we remember every life lost, every family forever changed, and the courage and humanity that rose from one of America’s darkest days.

From the first Albanian immigrants who took whatever work they could find, to today’s builders and business owners, doctors and teachers, artists and entrepreneurs—generations have worked with determination, sacrifice, and pride.

Behind so many success stories are long hours, parents who started again from nothing, and families who believed their children could go further.

“In my heart resides a longing, silent as a mountain.”
— Ali Podrimja

Some longings do not need words.

Ali Podrimja, one of the great voices of modern Albanian poetry, understood MALL deeply; the quiet ache for a person, a place, a home, or a time that lives within us long after we have left it behind.

Perhaps that is why this line feels so profoundly Albanian.

A mountain does not speak, yet its presence is impossible to ignore. So is malli.

For generations of Albanians, especially those living far from their homeland, that longing has become part of our literature and our inheritance.

We carry it in the stories of our parents, in the language of our childhood, in familiar songs, in old photographs, and in places that may be thousands of miles away but somehow remain close to the heart.

That is the power of Albanian literature: it gives words to what the heart has carried silently.

And that is why, at Votra, we continue sharing the voices that shaped us, so they may live in the generations that follow.
